Title: Need a good 12 ga 2 3/4 shell
Post by: barry on May 03, 2016, 12:52:43 PM
Want to use my old Rem 1100 to take another turkey.
It's chambered for 2 3/4
What do you guys think about the Winchester Rooster XR 2 3/4 load?
I've been told it's the same as the Winchester Longbeard load.

That's a good load, Winchester XX Turkey load is even better.

I have my Dad's old Browning A5 in 12 gauge 2-3/4". I use the factory full choke with it shooting Federal Premium Heavyweight #7 turkey loads using the Flight Control wad. Shoots good out to 45 yards.

Hevi-13 #6 1 1/2 ounces 2 3/4".  What I shoot and love the load!  Patterns beautifully in a fixed full choke out to 40 yds.  Wouldn't try it over 40 yds, though.
However, from checking Hevi-Shot's website today, they must be manufacturing that load as 1 1/4 ounces now.  I bought up a bunch of the 1 1/2 ounce shells when a local store put them on sale  couple years ago.

I wonder if the Rooster XR is close to the same as the old box of Winchester Super Pheasant I have?  I shot it a few times out of my Encore @20-40yd yards and it actually did ok out to 40.  It's 1-3/8oz #5 shot.

Federal 2 3/4" Heavyweight 7s would be my choice.

Plenty of good 2 3/4 shells out there   Nitro Mags #6, Remington Premier #6, Remington Duplex 4x6, Winchester Supreme 1 1/2 ounce Extra Long Range in #5 or #6.

Even the 1.5oz super x #5's shoot good in a couple of my only shotguns, the Rem express shells are adiqate to 30yds. If you can keep the shots under 30yds, pretty much any target load will get the job done, past 30 and things can get iffy.

I believe federal used to make a 2  3/4" shell with their mega weight #7 shot. Don't know if they still do but it would be something to look into.

I used my grandfather's Model 12 this spring to take a nice gobbler. At 20 yards, a heavy load #6 did the job.

There is some Win XR #6 2 3/4" at Jerry's Gun shop in Ardmore OK.  I don't know if they are willing to ship.

if you could find some, the Winchester XX 2-3/4" magnum 1-5/8oz load is a fine load in an older shotgun
