Title: My next Creation...
Post by: pappy on May 03, 2016, 11:14:37 AM
During the off season I have decided to make a few knives, already getting in some great practice...this is my next project. An Arkansas Toothpick. Hoping to get started soon. The handle is going to be Snakewood with Silver inlays (going to use silver dimes) the guard and pommel will either be stainless steel or brass haven't quite figured it out yet.

I always thought an Arkansas Toothpick was the pecker bone of a raccoon?   ;D

Stage 2.....ground it down ....no jigs all by hand, trying to stay like the old knives used during the Civil War era....dipped in solution of feric acid & white vinegar for 15 minutes to bring the damascus back out....cutting edge is 8" long...next step heat treating then looking for handle materials...(http://i1360.photobucket.com/albums/r646/pappyscalls/IMG_9734_zpsadvtofzd.jpg) (http://s1360.photobucket.com/user/pappyscalls/media/IMG_9734_zpsadvtofzd.jpg.html)

True story, when I was about 16-17 I stopped at a local Taxidermy my buddy was working at during the summer.  I picked up a odd looking shaped bone thing labeled "stirring stick" with a price tag of about $10... I thought it was pretty cool looking and asked my buddy he told me it was a raccoon dick bone.... Old timers use them to stir their tea/drinks....   :boon:
