Haha, you have no idea. He spent over an hour and a half trying to figure out that decoy. I had to not-so-quietly pack away my camera gear to finally convince him to leave, even then he walked away very slowly and kept stopping to strut every few steps.

Those are incredible.  Being a photographer as well I can really appreciate those.  That is one thing I don't have pictures of is strutting turkeys. I need to get put and get some one day.

He may be a fine gobbler, but aWild Turkey he ceased to be at the sight of the decoy.  That is the sad effect of sign stimulus.

Go fight your crusade somewhere else, this wasn't even a hunt, just a photo shoot.

Great pics!  Thanks for sharing.  Am I a bad or unethical turkey hunter because I don't even know what sign stimulus is?  What is going on here?

The component or characteristic of an external stimulus which initiates a particular innate behavioural response in an animal perceiving it, regardless of the presence or absence of the remainder of the stimulus.

Awesome photos, thanks for sharing!  :icon_thumright:

I had a jake get on top of my DSD hen and after he finished his business he literally laid on the decoy with his wings draped over the sides, he wore himself out.  Funny stuff.

The last pic should be captioned:

Why ya gotta be so cold?  You sure are pretty, but you are empty on the inside.  I'm outta here.  No wait.  Yeah, I am outta here.

So cool look a the pictures close and you will see some things happening-one is how red his head was only while he was touching the DSD---funny thing is that's how red my wife's face got when I told her how much I paid for my DSD;)

He was actually full on red when he first approached. Then he flushed white after a while, probably when he was getting a bit frustrated. The red came back when he sort of regrouped and went into a pretty intense display of strutting circles around her, although not as bright as when he first showed up. He went back and forth between white and pale red several more times after that.

I use a couple different camera bodies, in this case it was a Canon 6D. Lens is the Canon 600mm f4 IS II. These were all taken with the bare lens, I posted some in the photography subforum that used the 1.4x teleconverter for 840mm.
