Title: Wet Day in NY
Post by: Tunaguy on May 01, 2016, 09:20:51 PM
Opening day in NY was a wet one! Heard a few gobbles pretty far off early on but then they went silent. Covered a bunch of ground but couldn't make it happen. On the plus side my son and I saw a black bear.

Well after our opener on Sunday was a wash out, and another wash out yesterday. Look's like Mother Nature finally smiled down on us here in NY this morning!!! Headed out shortly, wish me luck!!!

The conditions were definitely miserable on opening day.  We were covered up in birds but never got a tom in range.  They only gobbled twice and we heard a couple of jakes gobble.  The strutting was minimal and the hens were really the only vocal birds.

Been the same in NH. Birds are vocal on the roost, but silent on the ground.
We're forecasted to have a low pressure system till the first of next week!
Lots of cool overcast showery weather.
I couldn't scare up a gobble if my life depended on it today.
It seems like too much of a good thing.
Last years winter was the mildest in history, and winter kill was minimal.
Seems like gobblers are always with hens, even if some hens are nesting, they're not all nesting, so gobblers don't have to hunt for girls!

Reports sound good with gobbling birds and henned up to boot.Maybe they will be looking for love in two weeks on my hunt. Anyone hunting Stewart forest? Any reports?
