I snuck in the woods just before the sky started lighting up here in Logan County, WV. I quickly put up a hen decoy about 25 yards on a flat in the hollow I was hunting & was placed on the side of the hill. I knew this hollow had gobblers all around it from scouting the previous weeks. It wasn't 5 minutes after sitting I heard one gobble deeper in the hollow then a chain reaction started with others gobbling on the other side of the hill & to the left of me on another mountain side. About 15 minutes later I seen the one deep in the hollow I was hunting in fly out towards the other mountain side. I started doing soft tree yelps & I could hear him & 3 others responding! I could see him in a grassy spot below me on the other mountain side. He was strutting & kept responding to my calls. Not too long after that he flew back on my side just above where my decoy was placed. I was thinking that this was gonna be too easy when a deer came from nowhere & got spooked then ran. I then looked & seen him a little further than I like to shoot & thinking he was gonna take off, I took a shot at him & missed the opportunity to seal the deal. He ran above me on the same side I was then flew out of the hollow to the other side of the mountain. It was around 8am. I then relocated out of that hollow, deeper into the main hollow on an old mining dirt road below. I found a Large grassy reclaim where I saw from below a tiny dark dot close to the top & then started yelping with my mouth call. As soon as I stopped I could faintly hear a gobble come from that direction & realized that tiny dark dot was a strutter way up above So, I then set up my hen decoy right there and positioned myself about 20 to 25 yards to the left of the grassy reclaim into the wood line beside. I could hear him getting louder as He answered back every time I would do series of yelps & cuts. I seen him coming down just above my decoy he was lasered in on & about 35 minutes later, 5 yards above my decoy he stopped raised his head up and I got a great shot off on him & sealed the deal! I went to him, kneeled down and Thanked the Lord. He had a 9 1/2 inch beard 1 inch spurs & weighed a little over 20lbs. Not the biggest but thank God for this 2nd chance plus an exciting Great Hunt! One down & hoping to tag out this Monday In Southern West Virginia ?? :fud:
