Title: Need advice
Post by: Coachwate on April 17, 2016, 09:12:47 AM
I've been hunting one bird all season. I actually hit him with my crossbow but hit him low as he jumped on my jake decoy. I thought he was lost because I never found him and he left a big blood trail that vanished. I gave it about two weeks and went back to clear out all my gear (private land but not my own) and as I was walking back saw him by my blind. I know it's him because he has a limp and is missing half his beard. Anyways, I've been going after him the last two weekends but he is hennaed up so morning is impossible. His boss hen hears any calling she flies into a neighbors field and brings him with her. In the afternoon his schedule is random. Should I just sit and wait all day, let him roam and come back next season, or get really aggressive with my calls in the morning? I've had one guy tell me to get close to where the hen roosts and hit my gobble call as he gobbles. What do you guys think?

If you can hunt afternoons,  go in the general area where he roosts and set up doing some light purrs and clucks with some scratching.  Be ready because they tend to sneak in without gobbling.  Good luck .

Go back and finish him off , shotgun whatever ...

If he likes that hen , put a hen decoy out where he flys up or down , and kill him
