I took a buddy on his first turkey hunt Wednesday. This guy has been my friend since we were kids. He's an army vet, picked up a Purple Heart in Afghanistan, drove his truck over an IED, and saw all kinds of crazy stuff over there. Anyway long story short he got on a fired up 3 year old that gobbled his head off and teased us for about a half hour in some pine woods before he killed him. Cool part was when he stood up he looked right at me and said "That was as intense as combat!" Kinda sums up why we do it right?
Good luck guys.
Intense is right, but the turkeys don't shoot back.
Glad your buddy is home and you had the privilege of taking him hunting.
Great story. Bet the adrenaline was flowing for both of you. Last year was my first turkey hunt. Neighbor/friend/co-worker invited me. He called in a old tom whose fan now adorn a spot in our family room.
Thanks your buddy for his service. Our freedom and that of so many depends on men & women willing to step forward and give it up for us all.
I can see this post being taken the wrong way so let me say that I didn't mean to offend anyone that has been through combat or belittle anyone's experience with it. I just thought it was interesting that the closest thing he could find to compare it to was combat. Just shows the level of excitement a gobbler can envoke. Take care guys.
Congratulations, That is very cool.
I can't say that I know what combat is really like, but I do know for me there is nothing like an old gobbler coming in just out of sight but I can hear him spitting, drumming and dragging wings....oh boy what a rush.
Thank you for sharing that.
Yes its the rush that keeps us hunting them if that goes away then there is no use hunting them :fud:
Thanks for the service.
That's great, congrats to you both!! :icon_thumright: And my thanks to your friend for his service.
Bob
Congrats to ya both and a special thanks from me to your buddy for his sacrifice and service so that all of us can continue to do something that we love so much!
Having been in a combat zone, I understand what your buddy was saying. Both experiences are hard to explain but have similarities.
I've participated on a Wounded Warrior Vet hunt several times and met some really great men, its one of my favorite turkey hunting weekends getting take those guys around, hunt and hear stories. Doing it again this year and I am pumped.
Good story. Thank him for his service from all of us too. :smiley-patriotic-flagwaver-an

Similarities in chaos, otherwise known as the fog of war. That what it reminds me of anyway.
