Sitting here listening for a gobble. It's almost dark and nothing. Started to get frustrated when all at once it started. A whippoorwill. Used to hear them all the time but haven't for a few years. I even told a friend the other day that I really miss hearing them and wondered what happened to them. All of a sudden it's as if I remember why I truly love this deal. It's not just the gobble, it's everything else that happens in the spring!! No gobbling but still a great evening!

For sure! Its great to just listen to everything come alive.
Agreed best part of Turkey hunting for me is listening to the spring woods wake up.

^^^This
There are a lot of little things that make up the whole experience for me and I enjoy them all, but gobbling has been a part of it for so long that it just doesn't seem like spring without them. The decline in our turkey population here over past few years has me worried, to say the least.

^^^^ This again It's the way my now 13 year old daughter explained it the first time I took her out scouting when she was 4. Next weekend she'll be on her first youth hunt
LOVE to hear the woods wake up! :camohat:
Nothing like listening to the woods wake up on a spring day!
Wish it lasted for hours.......LOL.
I wasn't listening to the woods wake up. If you read my post I said almost dark and a great evening. So I was listening to the woods go to sleep while pre season scouting. But I agree. Nothing like listening to the woods wake up!
Have youth season tomorrow. Taking my boy out. Didn't get to roost one because the t- ball team I help coach had practice. Oh well. We will hit it hard and hope for the best. I will be in listening range of a bird or two when daylight breaks.
