Title: Some people...
Post by: WNCTracker on April 14, 2016, 02:09:46 PM
Emailed a guy I know telling him about my season and how I got my heaviest bird at 24 lbs and this was his response,

"I set my expectations way to high now. I guess 3 seasons ago I took a 34 pounder with a 14inch paintbrush and 3 inch spurs. Since then I cant bring myself to shoot unless its that big."

I don't understand why people do this, pissing contests.  First of all, I was under the impression beards don't get that long because they drag the ground, secondly 3" spurrs on an eastern?  Come one and then there is the whole weight thing...34 lbs?!?!

Your buddy is either a fool, liar or jokester. Hopefully it's the latter. You should be in a better position to judge.

Truth told, I haven't killed a bird under thirty pounds this season.

that's cools so he killed the world record for typical turkey.. no big deal I'm sure he has the bird mounted and pictures to prove this..... or at least a good story about how his camera was broke, he doesn't "like" taxidermy, and he lost both the beard and spurs in a recent move but swears it was that big

I can't stand "one up-er" type people especially when they don't really know what they are talking about so their made up story isn't even close to believable.

That's why I say, " If you are going to tell a lie, at least tell one that is believable"

I can't stand people who can't be happy for others. When friends or family kill a big deer or a first animal or something I get more pumped about it than they do probably, especially if I'm there to enjoy it with them.

It would seem that due to certain social stigmas about the size of certain aspects of the male anatomy, that many men are prone to over-exaggeration.  I have seen 12 inch trout described as 20 inch trout, I have seen 9 lbs honkers described as 15 lbs honkers, and I have seen 10 inch turkey beards described as 15 inch beards...  I would guess that these same men have wives who have seen 2 inches described as 10 inches....

The gentleman  in the phone conversation was either joking, or compensating...

You know what they say about fishermen and turkey hunters. We sure can stretch the truth lol. Don't let it bother you. Always someone that has to out do what you do even if they have to lie to do it.

Your response to that should be nothing other than "you're the man...can't wait to see a pic of that next one!"

His figure are so ridiculous, it's GOT to be a joke. If it's not, keep with the above reply and then STOP emailing / texting / etc. with this douche

Not to say this guy is way off base but...

the record eastern beard is

1 CODY MAY (M)
TX ( details) 22.5000"  Apr 6, 2007
BOWIE, TX, USA M Firearm TYPICAL

and record weight for an eastern

1 DAVID CODY GUESS (M)
KY ( details) 37.6100 lbs.  Apr 21, 2015
LYON, KY, USA M Firearm TYPICAL

but (his) spurs are way exaggerated...

record spurs are

1 BILL WINN (M)
IA ( details) 2.2500"  May 20, 2001
VAN BUREN, IA, USA M Firearm TYPICAL

and none of these are on the same bird. His bird would be a new world record typical at 122, standing record is:

! JAMES E. LEWIS (M)
KY ( details) 104.8125  Apr 22, 1999
FRANKLIN, KY, USA M Firearm

Call him out and ask for some pictures of those spurs, beard and weight are possible. Make him feel a inch big.

One time I shot a bird so old that he had a combover.  He used his beak to pull his beard over his bald head, i saw him doing it.  At first I thought he was wearing high heels because his spurs were so long that he was walking on them instead of his rear toes..... :TooFunny:

Ask him if this looks familiar.

We actually had some Rhea set loose near where I turkey hunted.  I had all intents of harvesting one if given the opportunity.

I wish he was trying to be funny.  I showed him the records and he said in all seriousness that, "i know this sounds like i am exaggerating but there are gobblers bigger than that on this land and that they can't be called in, they have to be shot like deer where you pattern them and lay in wait."  I think what's happened is someone is caught in a lie......

Wait til you hear about the buck he shoots this fall, It's gonna be a SLAMMER! I've seen guys like that too. They've killed some critters that would almost scare you if you ever ran into them in the woods. I'll  congratulate them on their turkey, buck, or whatever and shake their hand. When the bull starts getting too deep I'll ask if they've got a picture, or if I can stop over and see what a real (whatever) looks like. Then the excuses start. I expect a little stretch when it comes to hunting stories, but some guys take it a little too far.

Who knows? If it doesn't get stolen, or a pack of feral dogs don't drag it off and if it doesn't burn up in a fire, we may be eating our words. ;)

IMO every bird called in with a call is a trophy. Whether it be a jake or ol' boss gobbler. You have fooled a wild bird in believing that you too are a wild bird looking for company. That guy obviously has a truth problem and is jealous of you!!!!

I hate it when guys make up stories like that to sound like they are the greatest hunters ever. Everybody knows that I'm the greatest hunter ever!!!  If I could get in touch with him I'd tell him about my bird last year. He had 8 beards, 4 spurs, and so big and fat that he had 2 chins!!  Never measured the spurs but I use them for splitting wedges now. I actually gave all the meat to the local food bank and they sent it back because they didn't have enough cooler space. Oh well, gotta go. Gotta go push my kid on his tire swing. I made the rope it's hanging on from that turkeys beard!

He should just stop turkey hunting now because he won't beat that.

Dated a girl for a while who's dad was like this. He was always talking about these big bucks he'd see. Sad part is, he'd see them every day of gun season and would never pull the trigger because they weren't big enough. I'm talking deer that would score 150"+. He finally shot a deer so my grandfather and I rushed over there expecting to see this huge monster. Get there and it's a typical basket rack 8 point that might have scored a whopping 80". He started out by saying he'd shot the wrong deer then went on to say that it looked bigger in the scope. Me thinks he shot the same deer he was looking at. Happened to be the first racked buck he'd seen that season if I were a betting man.

Don't worry about the guy. Allow him to live in the land where fish are longer, turkeys are larger and unicorns fart rainbow colored bubblegum that tastes like cotton candy.

Growing up, I worked at a skeet/trap club, and we had a member known for tall tales (and I mean tall).

No matter what happened to somebody, he had a story to beat it.  Most of his tales were outlandish (including emptying a .243 on a charging water buffalo only to have it come skidding to his feet dead with every bullet hitting the center of the head and a hole that could be covered up with a quarter).

Although entertaining to some degree, his outlandish stories irritated some people (as well as his having to top everyone's story).

Come to find out, he grew up during the depression.  No TV, no radio, and entertainment came at the dinner table with some storytelling.  Every meal, everyone in the family would try to outdo everyone else with a whopper of a story...  Although he ended up becoming very financially successful (enough to go on African Safari hunts), he never lost that habit of telling tall tales.

This thread reminded me of him...  Turns out, it is a good memory...

Sounds like one of my good friends...back in 3rd grade, haha. He used to lie just to lie, and they were so crazy. I remember when we first started deer hunting I was pumped that I got to go with my grandpa. We didn't see anything but a couple does, which weren't legal at that time at the start of the season. We were talking about hunting at school, and after I told my "no buck" story he said he had seen two 14 pointers and a 16 pointer. Being in 3rd grade, my first response was man, did you get one? He said no couldn't get a shot. Even at that age it didn't take me long to say hold up, you mean you had time to count 44 points and you didn't have time to shoot? Haha, that kid and his lies...still makes me laugh until this day.

Reminds me of the time this guy's wife went into labor.  It was way back in the country and the doc had to come deliver the baby.  After the blessed event they looked around for a scale to weigh the baby.  The ended up using the fathers fishing scale.  The kid weighed 15 lbs 7 ounces.
