Title: Weatherby SA-459 choke question
Post by: nyhunter on April 14, 2016, 04:53:38 AM
Has anyone patterned this gun with the turkey choke that came with the gun I think it's a .575,  with Fed. HW #7's?   If so what kinda numbers did you get?  What other chokes would you recommend with the Fed. HW #7's?

After looking at what everyone was shooting here I ordered a Carlson .575. First couple shots got me 155 average in the 10' circle, figured that was pretty dang good so I just stuck with that. I think next season I will try a sumtoy .562. Sorry just never needed to try the factory choke.

I did, just to find out. Put 97 in the 10" at 40 yards.  Not a real pretty pattern either, not real uniform.  I wound up with a Trulock.  160s at 40 yards. I have pics at home.  Stock choke put 130s at 30 yards.  I hunt a field a lot and wanted better 40 yard numbers.  Killed one last year at 38 steps with the Trulock.  Quite dead.

My Sumtoy puts 180+/- in the 10 @ 40yds. My Rob Roberts 570 puts 165+/- @ 40yds. Both pretty even but the Sumtoy has a tighter core.

155 average in the 10' circle

This is pretty much what my SA-459 does with the same combo.. and it's exactly how I like it for hunting.  Sumtoy will get the pattern tighter if you are after that..

Finally had the weather to shoot mine, best two patterns with the Carlson were 157 and 175 the third shot the pattern was horrible not sure if it was a bad shell or a dirty barrel. I'm happy with the performance but wouldn't mind seeing if a sumtoy can get better consistency.
