:jackson: well it's not a gobbler, but after passing on a couple of jakes this year I couldn't help myself and said screw it, I'm shooting this jake. He was one of two that came in to have a look at my hen decoy. They were really spooky walking in. They looked at the decoy and the blind and one putted twice and I thought for sure they were about to bolt, but they stuck around. So when they're heads went behind a tree, I raised my gun, waited for one to emerge and let loose a shower of number 5. Long beards. You sir, are a better man than I. If it were my first, I'd have no doubt shot the first bird that walked up. Got lucky with my first bird through as it was quite impressive. Beard was around 10.5-11" if I recall correctly and weighed a shade over 20#. No clue what the Spurs looked like but I didn't care either way. Shot several jakes after that and even whacked one a couple years ago. Won't say it'll never happen again either. Congrats to you sir. If you didn't think you were hooked before, you surely will be now. Get back out there and fill another tag.

When I took my first bird some 20+ years ago, I couldn't tell a jake from a mature bird but it didn't matter since I'd finally taken a turkey!!
Congrats on your first bird. Who cares if it isn't a gobbler its still a beautiful bird and don't be ashamed of it. I am sorry that you will be afflicted with this disease that we all suffer from of turkey fever. It is not curable and you will dream of turkeys and it will consume your life. Welcome.
Wow. Thanks everyone! Oh yea the very next morning I heard a tom gobble at camp! I pursued him and when I got down their he stopped gobbling. I thought he was on the neighbors property, cause he was not in the field. so I walked quietly toward the property line (which is a creek) and I got about 20 feet from it and boom! He was right their in the freaking creek! He hightailed it out of their before I could even shoulder my shotgun. In not sure if his gobbles were muffled by the dip of the creek or if he moved in their while I was making a move on him. If he would have gobbled 1 more time when I got to the field, he would have met his maker. But man, turkeys can be sneaky as heck!
