Took yesterday off of work and headed to my lease. The last couple weekends, I've been playing the cat/mouse game with a pair of toms with them being the victor usually due to some bonehead decisions by my part or just being setup in not quite the right place.
Morning hunt was eventful as a I saw a group of toms trailing two hens, but couldn't call them off of the hens. Return to camp for lunch, then off to my afternoon spot on a logging road which seemed to be part of the travel route back to the roost.
Setup decoys and sat for about 4 hours with some calling every 30 minutes or so. Getting to be the time where I think the birds should be back closer to the roost trees I decide to pack it in and try again in the am. I get to my feet which allows me to look further down the logging road. What do I see? Three bright red heads bobbing up and down making their way towards me. I ease back down and turn in their direction. Couple clucks on my aluminator and I'm ready with gun up, scanning the woods in front. Maybe 10 minutes goes by then I see them trying to cut the corner of the road to get behind my strutter decoy. Lead bird gave me the only clear shot and I let the 12ga bark.
And shoutout to Snapper1982 for the turkey tote. Came in handy.
