If you could get a vx3L 3.5-10x50 or the new vx3i 3.5-10x40 for the same price which would you get?

I would get the 40mm personally but that's just me. I don't like bulky scopes and I like them mounted as low as I can. But it all comes down to personal preferance.

It seems to mount as low as standard vx3i 40(http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160407/c888e469930db7905eede3771c03a5d7.jpg)

Then you seem to have your mind made up!  Get the 50 and enjoy it.

Not really. The new vx3i has the latest technology in a smaller objective vs the older but still great 50 mm objective. That's my dilemma

The advantage of the 50mm is light gathering capabilities. Looks like the "new" "Twilight Max Light Management System" is addressing the same thing?

Depending on what you will use the rifle for, I'd let weight and profile be my guide. I'm with Farmboy27, I prefer a streamlined look & feel.
