Title: Hunting in high winds
Post by: C.Kimzey95 on April 05, 2016, 11:09:31 PM
The next couple days here in middle TN look to be especially windy! What're some tactics you guys have to help deal with the howling winds and poor hearing conditions?

Run-n-Gun more to cover more distance and get within ear shot, and use a long box to cut through the wind

Hit some fields or open draws in the timber...there not very aggressive with there hearing and vision being at a handicap... box calls are good and I call a bit more often

I've hunted hard for four days in this wind in West Tenn. it has been tough these few days in this wind, i'm seeing hens everyday. Hearing some Gobbling but like i said i hate all this wind. Also in West Tenn we are ahead by about 2 weeks on everything greening up with the warmer weather. After today rain and cold front moves thru it's suppose to get back down to around freezing sat. morning, got to love turkey hunting.

Supposed to be 23 degrees and snowing with a 30 mph wind on opening morning here in NC on Saturday morning...headed to a sheltered area I know of and see if staying low will help. I figure hearing one will be tough.

Greg Massey, I'm in the same boat pretty much. The birds have left my two private farms so that's kinda hurting me too. Hitting more and more public spots to no avail. Got several buddies seeming to whack em but I can't seem to get on one. And Bill, haha that's funny!

I tend to hunt fields more in windy conditions. It's windier yet out in the open, but the advantage of being able to see more can help to balance out not being able to hear as well. Hunting the more sheltered places in the woods can be a help too, if the birds are there. :z-twocents:  Good luck with em. :icon_thumright:
