My first bird was in 2009 when i was 12. Me and my dad new there was some big birds here we had went the youth season and the first weekend of may since i had school i was only going on weekends. But the second week we went out before ligh and we were using a custom Call made for me by a good friend who owns IHW custom calls. The call had a sweet young hen sound and is very beautiful. Me and my dad heard a few gobbles while they were on the roost and they shut up after about half an hour off the roost. I was willing to shoot a jake or a tom since it was my first bird i was also using my dads mossberg 12 gauge 3 1/2 inch magnum to make sure i got the bird. But after an hour of waiting and hearing a few gobbles a few hundred yards away every half an hour or so it seemed like there wernt any turkeys in the woods. So that when my dad needed to go take a @#*% so he decided to cut a piece of my sleeve off as tp while he was kneeling down cutting my shirt he kept looking up and making sure nothing was there and all of a sudden i hear "oh shi* there he is dont move"
and i slowly look over to my left and i see a red head sticking out of the hedgerow 15 or 17 yards down and i slowly get the gun up and wait for him my dad laided down on his stomach and began making a soft purr and as the tom beagn to walk towards our decoy about 25 yards out in front of us the tom began veering off to the left and went straight out into the field and took a sharp right about 10 to 15 yeards behind our decoy and my dad said go ahead shoot. So i shot and i cpuldnt see the turkey anymore because he fell and disapered in the grass and i have honestly never seen my dad run so fast.. Haha :TooFunny: i asked him why he ran after it and he said it was because he was afraid it was gonna run away cus my cousin shot a bird with my dad and got up and ran and my dad ran after it for about 30 yards through the woods and over barbed wire fence and got his bird for him. And i got my self inch bearded tom with 1 1/4 inch spurs.
