Title: Beard and spurs
Post by: TauntoHawk on April 04, 2016, 06:19:44 PM
Do you guys keep the beard and spurs together from each bird you do you display them separate.

Ive always kept them together but I got some beard board displays that don't have anywhere for the spurs so I'd have to do something else with the spurs.

Keep the beards with pics and the spurs just get thrown in a jar

Spurs are my favorite part of a turkey. I have a couple of strings, but most of them are in little piles of whole legs (make great back scratchers). I don't throw beards away, but they seem to disappear.

Got beards and spurs scattered throughout the house. I don't keep them paired together. Try to keep them all but I have lost some over the years.

Mine of recent years are kept together but some have been misplaced in the past during moves and whatever else. Think I'm going to set something up and start leaving them at the camp. It's stationary unlike myself. Planning another move real soon so hard to tell where some will end up at that point.

That is a cool idea. Can you share your procedures for doing it? I'm sure you have simplified the method over time.

Yeah man it's real easy...dry your beard with salt. Clean the skin off the spurs with a knife and I use bleach to wipe the bone down with. Cut the plastic off of the shell. Knock the primer out from the bottom (prolly goes with out saying but I'll say it anyway. Do NOT use an unfired primer).  Put 550 cord through the primer hole with the loop sticking out of the top of the brass. Leave about 5in tags hanging out of the bottom. Then you pinch the beard between the 2 tags at the base of the brass and wrap with waxed dental floss. Apply a few drops of super glue to the dental floss and run it it. This will set up hard like a cast. Pit the remaining bit of 550 cord through the holes in the spurs and tie a knot. Cut the slack and burn the ends. Takes about 20 mins after you clean the skin off the spurs.

I make a long necklace out of my spurs and hang it on my rearview mirror when other turkey hunters see it they take time to want to talk turkey. I only do it during the season. It always keeps me fired up just before season starts

I've never kept the spurs and beards from individual birds together. I have a spur necklace made from birds that have special meaning to me for different reasons. First bird, some that drove me crazy for a while, things like that. Other than that, they go into plastic containers.

Some nice displays there guys.  :icon_thumright:

No but I sure wish I did. I try and keep my beards in the empty shotgun shells I killed em with. I do have one very special set of spurs that I use as zipper pulls on my turkey vest though. I got that idea from my uncle

I've never kept a spur. I just keep the beard in the shell used to kill him

Maytom I really like the plaques you've done, assuming you made those? if not where did you buy them I'd be interested in that first style you showed?!?

I hang mine in one of my gun cabinets. I started doing it this way because that is how my dad displays his...

I carry my two legs bands on my gunsling for luck...
