Title: Opening Morning TN Dirt Nap (UPDATED) Video and Story
Post by: gophert on April 02, 2011, 01:29:56 PM
Well, the pressure is off.  I have never been around so many birds in my life.  I bet we heard 8 gobbles (some were jakes).  This old boy just got a little too close...like 20 steps.  We had so much video that our battery died and we couldn't change cause the birds were on top of us.  Therefore, we did not get the kill shot.  I will post video stuff later this week.  Also will post stats in kill thread when I try to organize all these pictures.    >:(   Beautiful morning in middle TN!

The video is an edited 6 minute version of about 40 minutes of footage.  Needless to say, me and my camera man (Kevin) knew exactly where they birds were sleeping every night.  This is a huge pasture and these birds were on the far left of the field where the field narrows.  In order for us to get the decoys out in the field we had to get there way before daylight so they wouldn't see us.  There are probably 3 to 4 longbeards roosting around this field, these were the 2 big boys.  Plan was for the birds to fly down and come to bmobile and hens.  Of course that didn't happen.  Birds flew down at around 6:15 and we worked them for over an hour.  I called all the jakes over to our setup and the hens, but the big boys would not budge.  They were in the middle of the field about 150 yards out.  At about 7:30 the jakes and hens had gone to our right and behind us in another section of the field, still only about 30 yards from us, but we couldn't see.  We noticed that there was a lot of commotion behind us.  We had a hen behinds us in the woods kee keeing her heart out.  I looked to my right down the fence line and told Kevin that the jakes were coming back to be real still.  All of a sudden I heard him say "Big Bird...Big Bird"....I looked and 2 strutting long beards were at our right chasing jakes.  Needless to say, one of them did not like bmobile and at 20 yards he got slapped with Hevi #7's.  Never moved.  I said...did you get him on camera....NO...battery was dead.  At the time of kill, there were probably more than 15 birds within 30 yards of us.  My lower body was pretty much numb from not being able to move.

Congrats man.  Too bad you didn't get the kill on tape but it sounds like a great hunt.   :z-guntootsmiley:

Way to go Tim!

Sounds like you had an awesome hunt.  Nothing like having a bunch of gobblers hammering away to get your heart pumping and then finally sealing the deal on one.  Can't wait to hear all the details.
