Ok fellow hunters, was bad news for me today! Best area Ive ever hunted and today while scouting it, discovered it was recently logged. What to do? Did see a few tracks but nothing like there should have been! What do yall think? :camohat:
Part of my favorite area is in a state of constant logging! I don't know what the heck the deal is but for the past 4-5 years every so often they move back in, cut some more, and then leave again for a few months. Always seems like they start cutting again right before turkey season and right before deer season. It's a one or two man operation and I think they have the elderly lady that owns the land conned into letting them cut whenever and whatever they please and when they don't have anywhere else to cut they just move back in. Only thing saving me is I can hunt the 30 or so acres bordering that ground and the logging doesn't seem to chase the birds too far away.
I think if it's just been logged you will be okay this season. It's the second year after the cutting that has the most effect on the turkeys. They will increase travel routes looking for more food or until that logged off area has a few years to green back up...I think after whats left over and has a few years to rot this will help with the increase of insects etc within the cut over...
Forgot to mention that it was a prime roost area ad well. Used to hear turkies compete with each other for miles, or so it seemed. Nadda today. :(
Same..one bird this morning and he was at least 1/2 mile away...we are in the second year of a 100 ac. we had cut off our 1000 ac farm...in that 100 ac..was a prime roosting spot also...
