I'd like to get a few custom box calls. Give me some recommendations.
I'd like at least one to be a boat paddle.
I'd like to get a Billy White but am not sure if he's still making them and I don't know how to order if he is.
Thanks for the help!
Best deal around is a SS Custom Calls field grade box. Great looking call that sounds great and won't break the bank. He also makes a higher priced checkered box. Some other great call makers are:
Albert Paul
Frank Kruer
Tim Bullock
Darrin Dawkins
Ed Terefencko
Scott Basehore
Jeff McKamey
Mike Lapp
Steve Mann
Bob Harwell
David Halloran
Irving Whitt
Marlin Watkins
Lamar Williams
Some of these guys have a one to two year waiting list. Albert Paul will usually send you one in a few weeks and he makes one of the best around.
Jody, summed it up good above, if you want a Hustlin Hen from Billy White he is still making calls and I think they run around $80 but you can't go wrong with a field grade box from SS custom calls. Scoot
I would for sure give the guys at SS a call or PM and let em know what sound you're looking for and go from there. I got my 3rd box from them a couple weeks ago and just ordered #4 on Friday.
Mr Albert Paul makes a fine one and his waitlist isnt quite as long as some of the others listed!
Albert Paul's sound great
SS
Another vote for SS. Just received a new Mahogany and Purpleheart field box from Al and Josh. Its a work of art in both craftsmanship and sound. Also tremendous to deal with.

SS
Another good one that is also a member here is Mike @ Spring Creek.
I have both a long box and a short box from him and love them.
Great guy to deal with.
Can't beat a Marlin Watkins box or paddle
I just ordered a short box from Mike@Spring Creek. Nowto find a long box.
Also, if anyone has ordering info for Billy White, I'd appreciate it.
Thanks!

Haven't heard his name mentioned in a while but Tim Clayton makes a good box call and pot call.
Halloran purpleheart/ cedar would be my choice.
I'll give a shout out to a young man in Pa. that does nice work... Austin Hornberger. I have a field grade walnut over poplar that I love.

I'll give another plug for the fellas at SS. Couldn't bring myself to pay the price for a custom box until getting one of their scratch boxes in a trade. Then I couldn't see myself not giving them a chance. If I ever need another box, it'll be from SS. Well, to be fair, I've got a really nice Lonnie Mabry box call too. Both of which are super nice but I'd probably give the edge to SS. Just found it to suit my likings slightly better but make no mistake, both will bring about the death of some birds. My McKinnis box is nice too but I've found the sweet spot to be a bit narrower than I'd like. Still a great box but my money is on the guys at SS if I ever need another one.
Looks like the fella done ordered him one from Al and Josh. They make some good ones!!!

X2
I have a maple over black limba field grade box from Austin. Love it. My buddy also got a call from Austin and he loves his too, can't remember the wood combo on his though.
Maybe I should put "Bronco Fan" in my sig line if I am going to quote this guy. :toothy9:
Lol... I can respect that. (Cinncinati now, not so much ;D )
Get a Billy White Hustlin Hen. You won't regret it.
I'd also add Mr. Jerry White (Dads Custom Box Calls) to the list. His purple heart over cedar checkered short box is all turkey and I won't leave home without it.

Jody gave you a good list of guys that make box calls that kill turkeys period. I just got another Albert Paul box call. Maple over mahogany. I really like his box calls.
Well this year I've bought a Paul and an SS. There's other great makers out there as well.
I just got back from Lonnie Mabry's shop in Georgia and couldn't be happier with the calls I received from him.
I only got one box call, Billy Whites Hustlin Hen. Just don't carry many calls, normally a few mouth calls and a friction pot. So one box call is enough to take once in a while. And box calls are the number 1 call I hear on Gamelands, is the main reason I don't carry it much.
I'm exctited to be getting box calls from Frank Kruer and Chad Griep.
