Title: Holographic sight questions
Post by: captpete on March 26, 2016, 11:31:02 AM
I have a Mueller Quick Shot sight on my 1187 20 ga. that my wife uses. We were out patterning last week. Got the gun all sighted in(she did all the shooting). We had shot quite a bit and she was getting tired & a little sore. Like I said we had the sight dialed in out to 35yd. I wanted to see a pattern of certain shell at 15 yds. She didn't want to shoot anymore so I shot the gun. The pattern hit about 4"-5" low. Wondering if was just the shell or not, I shot a shell that she had used to sight in the gun, it was low also. I had her shoot both of the shells and they both hit dead on.

Now here are my questions:  I have read and heard that once the gun was sighted in, no matter who was shooting it, the gun would hit where the dot is...is this true??

I have also heard that no matter where the dot was in "glass" it would hit where the dot is....is this true??

If these things are true, any ideas why the gun was hitting low for me, but dead on for her??

My experience is limited to one sight a Burris FF3 that I mounted on my daughters 20ga, I sighted it in with target loads and then switched over to her Federal HTL heavyweights in #7 and POI was the same, had her shoot it and no difference in POI, again first and only RD sight I have ever owned.

Yes generally your statement is true.

Generally what you said I have found to be true. As far as where the dot is, and I'm not certain this is true for all manufacturers, but on my Truglo the instructions said to keep the dot in the center 2/3s of the sight. It said if fired with the dot anywhere in the outer most third of the sight that POA may not end up being POI. Hope this helps.

Put the gun on sand bags or in a lead sled, with the dot centered on target.  Now, without letting the gun move at all, move your head around and see if the dot stays on target.  I would make sure with the dot anywhere in the window that it stays on target.  I've done this before and only seen about 1-2" of movement at 40 yds... that's not much when comparing one extreme head location to the other.

If it was sighted in when she was shooting maybe she aims higher or the kick of the firearm could be raising the POI?

X2. I couldn't agree more with this great advice.
