Been running a pot call for a day now. I know I need more practice, but how do I sound? Any tips?

After listening to myself I think my cuts should be sharper perhaps?
where i play the pot depends on how i want it to sound. You get a higher pitch closer to the edge and a deeper pitch closer to the center. For purring i grip the striker a little higher up on the striker. Also if you have some different kinds of wood strikers you can make different sounds on one pot call. Your sounding good just keep it up. I still practice after hunting turkeys for almost 30 years been practicing on a box call today.. Remember you don't have to be a great caller. 1 - you need to have turkeys to hunt. 2 - you need to limited your movement or they can see you. 3 - BE PATIENCE... Don't try and be back at the truck at 10 clock..more turkeys are killed from 10 clock in the morning until 2:30 afternoon.. a lot of the time a gobble may hear you calling of a morning and after the hens leave him a lot of the time he will come back to that hen he heard that morning which could be you...
You're doing a great job. IMO, Your yelping cadence needs to be shortened and space out your cutts and you will be fine. The worst and most broken up calling I heard in the woods was a young hen. Therefore, our calling needs to be enticing not purrfect. Good luck.

I've killed quite a few turkeys but have always used a mouth or box call. I wasnt necessary trying to do a sequence I would use, just wanted to get the sounds down. I kill most of my birds with a some yelp and purr.

I agree. I have heard a lot of real hens that sounded horrible compared to what a lot of people consider "good"! But they all have a certain rhythm to them. Get that rhythm and cadence right first and then worry about the perfect sound.
