Title: Weatherby sa-08 vs sa-459
Post by: bswearing on March 21, 2016, 04:16:39 PM
I purchased a Sa-08 compact for my daughter.  Now I am thinking I want one for me.  The adult SA-08 comes in 26 or 28" in black.  I am planning to add the pistol grip.  Which barrel would you recommend or would the Sa-459 short barrel be that much lighter and better for turkey. I prefer black to camo and I could put the original butt back on and use for ducks, etc.  I seem to remember someone had converted a SA-08 in 28" with the pistol grip but not sure why he chose the longer barrel.

I have the SA-459, but I would think you could get the compact SA-08 with the 24" barrel and add the pistol stock and I would pretty much be the SA-459.  It might cost a little more to do that, but you would have basically 2 guns vs just a turkey gun.

But is the SA08 drilled and tapped?

I have no idea, but I would guess it is not.

I have the sa-459 and it's a sweet turkey rig. Really light and I mounted the FF right to the factory rail. If I wanted to wing shoot with one I think I would want the 26' barrel. I think you should just buy two, a sa-459 for turkey and a sa-08 for everything else. It seems like it would be a pain to take the butt stock and optics off for ducks then go back on with all of it for turkey.

Me. I bought the gun with a 28 inch barrel. Then bought a pistol grip stock direct from weatherby. No other reason except I like a long barrel. I can wing shoot with this gun.

savduck,

What rear/sight are you using in this case?

I bought the SA-08 compact with the 24" barrel and added the pistol grip stock, purchased separately directly from Weatherby. The pistol grip stock added about 1" total length from the original compact stock. I also had the receiver drilled and tapped for a 336 base mount/ Burris FF3. I have really enjoyed this setup.
