Title: Short or long barrel ???
Post by: Ohio river tom on March 17, 2016, 02:52:48 PM
My gun came with 2 barrels. 22 in and 28 in. Does the length make any difference in how a choke will perform ?

It certainly does! Best thing to do is try both barrels with the same choke/load combos. Or figure out what one you want to hunt with and find a choke/load that shoots well in it.

I shot the 22 in with .670 XX full X factor choke. 3 1/2 in 2 3/8 ounce #6. At 40 yards i got 364 shot in a 20 pack coke cola box.

2 3/8oz payload? This a hand load?

A lot of guys find that a longer barrel patterns a bit better and also gives a bit more velocity.  I personally think that the handiness of a shorter barrel out weights the decrease in velocity and pattern.  But only testing with your gun will show if it follows the normal or not.

Save that long barrel for ducks and doves.  Shorter barrel easier to work with in Turkey woods.  Do a bunch of reading on here about chokes and loads, and then go try some out to see what gun likes best.  What gun you got?

Like I said, I think that for all the more velocity that is lost, a shorter barrel makes up for in handiness!

I agree w farmboy, I personally care not about the velocities n would rather have a dense load in a handy gun. Not toting no 28 incher into the woods

Looking today at both barrels. I like the 22 in because it fits good on my grizzly and dont hang out to hit limbs. The 28 in sticks out alot pass the rack and fender.
I think i will use the 22 in because of limbs and trees on the ride up in the mountains.
