As the title says I'm searching for a choke for my 9 yr old sons 870 compact junior.....lots of people like the ssx choke but I'm worried it may be too tight for the 2 3/4 fed hw's.....anyone have suggestions?would the shortness of the barrel benefit from a tighter constriction?
My 20 is a full size model that I put an 18.5" barrel on. I have tried, carlsons 575,Trulock #7, JEBS 555, JEBS 560, Indian creek, SSX, Sumtoy 562, and Sumtoy 570. Sumtoy 562 performs the best in mine, followed closely by the Trulock. i think the 560-565 range is where you will see best results. Hope this helps.
My daughter is only 13 n has hunted for 3 years. When we first started I felt I wanted birds in the 25-30 yard range. We shot federal heavy 7s out of a modified choke. There was no where for a bird to hide. Very dense, and a bit forgiving. Awesome set up for a kids gun. Most guys imo choke kids guns way too tight fearing a missed 40 yard shot instead of a missed 25 yard shot. Hedge your bets, give em a choke they can shoot
I use a 565 Trulock non-ported choke for my 870 youth 21 in barrel...It's a great all around choke...if you don't like the choke the first 60 days you can return it for a refund or exchange ...the also have a lifetime warranty..what else could you ask for..
factory full choke is a good choke to start a young person out with, especially using the federal heavyweight 7's with the flite control wads

With that shell I would definitely try a factor full or modified first. For a youngster those shells can be way to tight at close ranges through a turkey choke.

Stick with factory chokes, if you are only letting him take very short shorts 10-20 yards, even a modified choke may be well suited with those shells.
If it was me I would go with a good choke that give the best pattern. (few to pick from but I only like one :z-flirtysmile3: LOL)
You can run junk lead loads for the short stuff to open the pattern up. I would keep a federal hwt in for next shell just in case it gets up you have a load that will hammer him. Now if you get out and about in the fields and need the distance with will have the choke to do it. Plus you may want to take the gun sometime. So good choke and play with shells.
