Title: Coyote Howler for Locator Call?
Post by: FLGobstopper on March 14, 2016, 11:03:49 PM
Posted this in the locator calls section but haven't gotten any response. Anyway, going to Nebraska and Kansas and looking for a good locator call. I've heard to bring a coyote howler and need some recommendations of type and or brand.

What have you used and works best?

I live in the Northeast. Last time I had a coyote run across a couple toms I was working that game ended real quick. IMO I wouldn't use that. Last year they were gobbling to a hawk scream.

I hunt Nebraska and I sometimes use a coyote howler to roost them and it works real good.  I'm just scared to use it in the morning not knowing where they are. Might spook em. I use an owl hoot in the morning.

I'll use a coyote howler late in the evening when I feel confident the birds are already on the roost. I've had pretty good luck getting them to gobble with a coyote howler and I don't do a long drawn out howl. I'll do a few yips and then a loud but fairly short howl and then quickly cut it off and listen for gobbles. I use a Primos howler. I should also say I listen for birds to gobble own their own first, but if I'm not hearing anything then I'll hit the howler.

Coyote howler works good in big wide open country.  I've used them to roost and to locate in the morning.  If I think a bird is close I may not use it, but only because it's so loud.  I currently use a Primos without the tube.

Turkeys know a coyote by sight.  I don't believe they are capable of hearing a howl across a field and thinking that they need to be careful because there is a coyote close by.  Same as with an owl or a crow.  They aren't thinking.......hey....it's too early for that crow, or it's too late for an owl.  It's purely a shock gobble.

I've got a Johnny Stewart coyote open reed howler that's worked for shock gobbles. Also use it more in the evenings, and a owl hooter in the mornings.

Works great from a distance but inside of 300-400 yards my experience is it can shut them down.  I do use one just not close.

I won't use one at all in the places I go. Our gobbling has dropped off drastically since the introduction of the coyote. I believe whole heartedly that they've learned to understand that gobbling attracts the dogs. If every time I gobbled a dog showed up, I'd learn to gobble less too. No sense ringing my own dinner bell. Not a fan. I'd rather use a peacock or goose call than the howler but that's just me.

I rarely use a coyote howl,if I do it's in the evening. I hunted a turkey for three weeks that would gobble from the roost at everything, and I mean everything. He would gobble at coyote howls in the morning I never experienced any coyotes bothering this turkey.
