I am thinking about hunting north central KS/ south central NE in May. I could go either the third or 4th week of May. Just wanted opinions on these dates. Am I risking that the turkeys will be done gobbling by going this late?
Thanks
I have hunted the 3rd. week in north central Kansas and the turkey are still going strong, lots of gobbling and strutting birds. My friend hunts NE the middle of may and all ways get his birds. Most of the time we try to hunt the 2nd. or 3rd. week in KS. Good luck on your hunt.
If those are your only 2 options I'd take the third week over the fourth.
Warm temps so far seems like we will be heading for an early spring, which could lead to the vegetation and crops being a few weeks ahead in terms of growth height which makes hunting a bit tougher.
We hunted closing weekend a couple years ago and had pretty tough sledding due to these factors.
Definitely the third week...
My buddy and I always go the first or second week of may and I would not hesitate to go the 3rd week. Last year we went from seeing very little birds to birds all over the place the second to last day of our second week hunt. We try to keep those first two weeks open and play it by ear depending on weather for when we make the trip.
PS - not sure where you are from, but plan on anywhere from chilly to scorching weather. I've hunted that area and time of year with temps in the 40s and temps in the upper 90s...
