I have two Lights Out honey pot calls which I love and a decent box call which is OK.
However, I would like to try a diaphragm call later this season and am wondering what to try.
I was given a HS Strut E-Z Rasp after last season and played around with it for a month or two before I lost it.
But I never got quite the sounds I wanted out of it.
I know this was mainly operator error but also don't know if that was a good mouth call to start with.
I'm looking for recommendations for good call(s) for a beginner to start with.
I see the Hooks Executioner and Devastator mentioned often but don't know if these are for more advanced callers or not.
So what diaphragm calls would you recommend for a beginner to start with?
Hooks. And just practice your be a mouth calling turkey killing machine in no time!
I would recommend a 2 reed call with no cuts or slight cutts on each side. Once you learn how to make sound with the call you can move into more raspy sounding calls. As a rule of thumb the more reeds and more cutts the harder it is to work. Good luck,

Find you a single or double reed to learn on. The single is easier for starters.
I cant buy into the single reed stuff I have never heard someone blow a single reed that resembled a turkey.. I would recommend a double to light triple with a simple V cut or combo cut..
Cant make chicken soup out of chicken poop
Pmd ya
any hooks call will be good!
Get a single, or double reed diaphragm, stay away from the triples or the ones with the fancy cuts. Keep it simple at first. Learn how to use the call, then advance. Practice, practice, practice, practice.............and then practice some more. If the call is tickling your tongue or the roof of your mouth, you are holding it wrong. Use your tongue to put the call at the roof of your mouth. Don't blow hard, it only requires gentle air flow. It took me 3 years to get it to work. Finally, one day, a yelp came out. From there I did it again, and haven't looked back. Now, I'm not too bad. I don't compare to the good guys, but I kill my share. Don't give up, you can do it too!!
get you a good double reed call to start with
Primos makes a CD and three pack of mouth calls to help you learn how to use a mouth call. It helped me IMMENSELY. I went three or four years of putting a mouth call in and not doing very well. They really break it down to help you.
Also, don't be afraid to try a smaller framed call (youth/junior sized). I have a narrow palate and mouth, and it ended up being the difference for me. I'm still not great, but I can cluck and yelp well enough to bring him in to the kill zone, which is what I wanted a mouth call for anyway.
Hope it helps. Good luck!

I agree. Light triple with a V cut is the easiest to run.
