The way the build is designed to be used one would put a pair of fully charged rechargeable AA batteries in the camera and add a pair of fully charged alkaline D's in the added battery holder, in this manner the D's will keep the rechargeable batteries topped off thus increasing the battery life. I routinely can get around 2500-3000 pictures taken as long as all batteries were fully charged to begin with and using a 4gb capacity memory card to hold that amount of pictures.
This is my favorite camera, about a 1.5 second trigger, has the brightest flash of all, and takes the most highly detailed pictures either day or night.
