Title: breaking a choke in?
Post by: agent eight seven O on March 06, 2016, 07:49:20 PM
Does a new choke need to be broke in? As in, putting some shots through it to produce optimal patterns.

I can't say for sure, but a couple boxes of target loads are not gona hurt it, just make sure you clean it well before you pattern your shotgun.

Normally with every choke I will put a cheap box of 25 thru it, clean it up real good and then test it with various turkey loads. I've had quite a few chokes improve pattern density and consistency doing this.

I have better luck with pattern density when I put a few rounds through a new choke before I shoot my turkey loads.
Seems they shoot better after breaking them in.

Sorry for trespassing but I was watching the same thing
I deep cleaned my new 835 barrel before I put the first round through it. I've put 20 rounds through it now. Should I deep clean the barrel again and should I run the snake through it as I pattern it. Also is there a preferred way to clean choke and should I oil it?

You may find this article to be helpful http://allaboutshooting.com/blogs/blog/98764039-breaking-in-a-choke-tube

It needs a little editing since I updated the site but the meaning is still there.

Thanks,

I specifically ran a box of 25 #9 trap loads thru that choke you sent me last year, cleaned it, patterned completely different. It was more uniform at all distances and much more dense without noticeable gaps. Before and after it was a killer choke and still is!
