Looking to buy a new 870 in bottomland camo for my next turkey slayer this year. What kind of chokes are yall running in your 870's? Ive always had a mossberg so im not sure where to start with a 870. Plan on shooting either hevi 7's or longbeard 5's and 6's. Do 3" or 3.5" shells shoot best in these guns?
First step, deep clean the barrel.
Next step, grab a Jellyhead .660, .665, SSX .643, or a Sumtoy .665
Last step, LB 3.5" #5
Pattern and smoke birds.
Pretty much what Philippe said. I will add that when I was shooting an 870 super mag I had great success with a Jelly Head .660 and Hevi #7's (335 in 10" circle at 40 yards). And I had great patterns with a Jelly Head .665 and Long Beard #5's.
I always liked the HeviShot 2.25oz #7s out of a .665 Indian Creek. Best pattern was 324 in a 10" circle. I have unintentionally broke wing bones on birds beyond 40 yards with those shells.
I used to have that exact gun... longbeards did great in it with the Carlson longbeard choke I had.. 3.5" 4's and 5's are what I used with great results
When I had that gun I shot the Hevi 7's thru a Jellyhead .660 and always put 300+ in the 10" circle at 40 yards.
our 665 or jellyhead will fix it up most the time

Yup... :camohat:
another good choke with that gun is a kicks gobblin thunder
You have gotten some great advice from some of the best in terms of setting up turkey guns. I shoot that same gun. Great patterns with Ventilator .655, Kicks .655, Hevi 13 Choke, JH .665. The only issue I had with the gun was a rough barrel from the factory. The new 870's can need some work to get them right. Had my gunsmith polish the gun and it shoots amazing. I would deep clean the barrel as soon as you get the gun and see what you have. Great all around gun.
got the same gun.
Jellyhead .660 with Hevi13 #5's or 6's, or if you want lead go with Longboards. #4's love my gun
Hevi13 #6's - 220 in 10" at 40 yards
