Title: Turkey Hunters make for good forum members
Post by: clfergus on February 29, 2016, 02:17:32 PM
I am a member at multiple forums from gun sites to deer hunting sites. I don't post that often on here but I have noticed that the posts and replies on this site are typically interesting and informative. I don't know why but I feel like on gun forums and especially deer hunting forums someone always gets offended and the arguments fill up the next 3 pages.

Am I the only one who has this opinion of OG vs many other forum sites?

I've been a member of this site for quite a few years now, & I have to commend the members. There are always going to be arguments on any discussion forum,  but the OG members are some of  the best at disagreeing but staying civil to one another. Because of this attitude,  I  fully recommend this site to anyone looking for info on chasing the king of spring.

Hoping y'all have a phenomenal season.

I only became a member of this site a few days ago but I have visited the forums many, many times in the past several years.  The reason I became a member was because of the friendly atmosphere and willing ness of the members to share info and tactics and not be judgemental or critical of others!  Definitely feel welcome and feel this is the best hunting forum on the web!! :you_rock:

This site and a bowfishing site I'm on are great. The others get kind of off topic a lot.

This is a great forum. Every one is helpful and respectful, can't same the same for a lot of other sites.

Very true.  This is one of just a few sites that I would recommend to a new hunter.

Ive about whittled it down to just OG, don't care for arguing. The folks on here do a good job of being funny, informative and civil, but dead serious about turkeys, guns and how to hunt them.

Agree some people just got to thin skin for a forum and look for an argument I'd rather have a good discussion myself and we don't have to agree I appreciate other point of view especially since I'm of the age to now know I'm not always right

This is the only forum I have joined. I love a good discussion as well. And we all know that die hard turkey hunters are usually pretty opinionated, myself included. It's when it gets to the name calling and personal attacks that I bow out. Most guys keep it very civil here and for that reason it's the best.

I'm in total agreement!!! On a FB deer hunting page that I frequent, if you mention shooting a 1 1/2 or 2 1/2 yr old buck, you are totally disrespected. On here, Shannon won't put up with that crap!! I feel as long as your are hunting legally and ethically, we should praise and congrat each other. If something is a trophy to someone, they shouldn't be be ostracized! This site is for us to share stories and techniques that have worked for us. Yes, at times there will be differences of opinions, but in the end we treat each other as equals. I love this forum and have made some truly awesome friends over the last few years I've been a member and I hope to make more in the future!!

This site SUCKS!! Do you have ANY IDEA how much $$ this place has cost me!!

Lol... It is refreshing not to have  every single topic spin into other topics & debates. I've lurked for quite awhile, but I have found this site to be extremely entertaining and informative, and deserving of joining and supporting. Thanks to all.

The best site I have been part of .
Get to learn from some great hunters on here.
The bad part is that it's bad for my bank account

I agree.  This is a good site.  A lot of that has to do with the fact that Shannon has tried to weed out the riff-raff and troublemakers.  Come to think of it, I am a bit surprised I have made it this long.   ;D :toothy12:

No, I agree with you and I also don't post a lot, however I've be a member from the very beginning even before we had to sign back up because of a sever change. This is great site and anyone wanting to participate on a deer hunting forum should check out the hunting beast site.

I have been a member of this site for a few years , it is informative, entertaining a great place to be when you cannot be in the turkey woods. I also belong to another site that is the same way but it's a bunch of fly fisherman. Both are GREAT. :icon_thumright:

I belong to 5 forums and OG has a certain attitude that's not found on other forums.  Now there are a couple of other places that maintain a good attitude. That said OG is a good collection of nutjobs.

I'm a member of quite a few other forums as well and OG is head and shoulders above any that I've seen. If y'all think some of the deer hunting forums are bad go check out some of the duck hunting forums, gotta have some mighty thick skin to take part in some of those, lol. Shannon has done a great job, along with all the great members here, to keep this place the best hunting forum around!

I was just thinking the other day that OG is a dang good forum. I have made a few post so far and have had recommendations and good replies to each one. I can say without a doubt this is one of the best forums out there. Thanks everyone for making it a good place for people to come and get information on the sport, with good advice.

This GREAT site starts with the administrators.  They have set simple rules to BE NICE, if you sell something you have to have PICS, stand by the 40 yard rule, don't post DRAMA and they monitor and will ban you if you don't follow a few simple rules.  As far as the members, they follow the simple rules, are very knowledgeable and willing to share their knowledge and believe in the Joe Friday rule, "Just the facts Mam, just the facts."  GREAT Administrators, Great Site, Great People!!!!!

Yep, you didn't last long on that other forum because you are such an elitist... lol, seriously good to see you my old friend! Still would like to take you up on that hunt we talked about so long ago, one of these years!

In my experience, duck hunting forums/facebook have been the worst. Don't really know what makes this place so different. Maybe the admins just weed out the troublemakers. I'm starting to think that turkey hunters just have a different mindset, though.

We turkey hunters have a different mindset that's for sure!!  Don't know if that's good or bad, but one things for sure....We're all a little nuts and we like it that way!! :happy0064:

Odd...  I am still able to post???

Bird hunting is my passion, and waterfowl tops my list...  Turkey hunting appeals to me for many of the same reasons... Calling birds in, and getting them close...  The anticipation of working birds...  The excitement before shooting time when hearing or (in the case of waterfowl) seeing bird activity...  And both activities often require problem solving (to be consistently successful), which I admittedly enjoy.

Growing up waterfowling, and being in the infantile stages of turkey hunting, I probably learn a bit more on this turkey hunting site than I do on the waterfowling site...  But admittedly, I have learned a lot about ballistics, ammunition, choking, and habitat management on the waterfowling sites as well as this site...

I find turkey hunting to be far more frustrating...  One day I call in a bird from a quarter mile away, and the rest of the season they hang up at 70 yards...  And I NEED to know why...

I keep telling myself "Be the turkey..."  My wife would say I am well on my way to success in that aspect, but it has not made me anymore successful in the field.

YOU GUYS .......are what make this site so dang good !!!!!

I'll share a private conservation I had with Dr. Lovett Williams some years ago , and in that conversation we were talking about how good the folks here are , and how Lovett loved answering all the questions , I mean he enjoyed it greatly , be said "turkey hunters are a cut above" and he explained out of all the hunting groups out there the turkey hunters themselves as a group were the best , that's coming from a person I respected greatly

I could write a small book about my experiences with making and maintaining  the forum , all I can say is THANK YOU !! Because you folks are first class , you talk online as if you were talking to someone face to face !!  Your good folks

I have however had some run ins with some idiots on here , (now elsewhere ....=) but I got thick skin .... Only on the Internet can fools become the wise .....where teenage kids can pass themselves off as world renown experts on everything, I've seen it all -

anyways , enough of that thank you for being such good folks !

Btw .....we just passed 10,000 registered members yesterday , because of folks like you Oldgobbler is what it is
