Title: FAVORITE TURKEY VEST DEBATE 2016
Post by: TeamCF on February 26, 2016, 12:26:45 AM
I have had a very faithful and deady Super Elite III She faded and I last season I got the Tenzing TZ14. I dont like the bulk of the TP14 and the kick stand doesnt do it for me.

Well straight out of the box I was not a big fan of the vest. Lots of lengthy straps, the magnets for the seat didnt work and the straps for the seat are too high behind you to rely on comfortably. So I went to town on that thing and while I may not be the best at sewing I managed to turn it into a very workable vest. It has plenty of pockets and great striker holders. The back pack part on the back has a small opening but it works well for different things. I do like the vest now and it did not hurt me on any hunts.

I am interested in trying another vest though. I like how the I beam looks but I dont like the black straps.

Anyone used the Knights Hand Free Elite Vest? The new NWTF Vest looks great buts not in Obsession. What about the Russell Limbhangar?

Still using my Super Elite III, but I've had a few others. So far, nothing has been perfect. Thinking of going with something different again this year, just not sure what!

I Love my Tactical Tatr II and can not speak of the ones that you had mentioned above personally but will say that there is a gentleman here at work who sells the Knight vest and a lot of guys here at work have bought it off him and say that they like it.

Well, I've had my Primos vest for about 11 years or so and I've got but one complaint. I don't like that my strikers ride up out of the holders when sitting down and getting back up. If I could find a way to keep from losing them, I'd give it a 100% for sure. Plenty of pockets and they're right where you need them. Everything is easily accessible. Not sure they've changed them much as I've not looked at other vests but I really like mine. Just need to find a way to attach something to ,y strikers to keep them safer.

Ol tom.. I don't know the exact name .. The magnets work it's not bulky and holds the calls well .. It's just two Shoulder straps and a magnetic seat .. I've had it for 3 years now and I'll get another one if it ever wears out.

Ol Tom Ibeam 2.0 - got the vest this offseason and she will be a good one. Is put together well and the pocket layout is very logical. There is more space than I need but good for those all day hunts way back off the river or in the swamp. Has some great mesh pockets inside a zipper pocket to hold my trumpets. I can carry two boxes. Has great lay out for strikers and pots. Even a pocket for a water bottle and thermocell.  Great seat and back padding. Very happy with the vest.

Looked hard at the Knight Vest and it will be my next vest after I wear this one out.

Another vote her for the Cabela's Tactical tatr II.  I started using this vest two years ago and so far for me it's been the best one.  I had an Ol tom before this one and it was nice, but it just was hot to me, and the back cushion magnet would never stay attached.  I have been really happy with the tactical TatrII.  They go on sale pretty often and you can usually snag one pretty reasonable.

have a Tatr2 but was looking for something less bulky and lighter.  Looked at the Minimalist, but it didn't have any inside pockets. Creature of habit, that's were I like to stow my gloves and facemask. Stopped at a WallyWorld and say a Mossy Oak vest for under $50.  Thought, what the heck.  Took it home and loaded it up, and I like it better than the Tatr2.

I just got the Tat'r II this off season.  Not wild about the pot call pull down pocket or the way the box call pocket is hard to open but the great cushion and kickstand seem to offset the bad.
Really like that new ALPS vest but it's too late for me, gotta use what I got.

I had a Super Elite III vest that I used for a couple of years and I like the layout of it, but I wanted something a little more open for warmer weather.  After some searching, I ended up with the tactical tat'r II.  I like that the upper area is quite open, as I hunt some pretty warm areas.  Also I really like the flip up seat.  It is so easy to get it down or out of the way when getting up/down in a hurry.  The pot call pockets are a little tight, but I like them.  I also wish it has some sleeves for shotgun shells, but I just wrap a rubber band around 3 shells or so and toss them in a pocket.  Overall I love my tactical tat'r II vest.

I have a primos that I've been using going on 10 years now.

The Knight's vest has my eye though.  If I were getting a new one, I'd lean that way.  If it came in bottomland, I'd be even more set on it.

The Limbhanger is a great vest but has been discontinued for at least 3 years.  I do not know what vest in current production comes the closest to that model.

I've been wanting to replace my older 10X vest, but just do not like any of the newer vests I've come across?
Guess I'm old school as I just hate the newer vests with exterior boxcall pockets. Wish I could find one similiar to the 10X, big bellow pockets, with dividers within for boxcalls and such.

Super elite 3 for me. If I can't carry my stuff in that then I don't need it. Wish the striker pockets were vertical though

Been using an HS Strut s.u.v. vest for awhile now and like it a lot. My Son got me an ole Tom vest last year for my bday and it's pretty nice too. Do you guys with the ole tom vest have any problems with getting a box call to fit in the front call pockets? I can't get a normal sized box in the pockets, its like they are too small or something.

I've had a ol Tom strap vest for past 6 years. It was falling apart 2 years ago....I got by with zip ties holding it together last year.   The ol Tom is light weight and convienent to use however the quality is lacking. I'd by another ol Tom if I knew it wouldn't fall apart on me. Just ordered a minimalist from cabelas. I also like the look of the academy sports hybrid vest- I'm not real big on the specialty pockets on the front. I'll have a chance to break in the minimalist in a couple weeks

+1 .. the old tom lightweight vest seams can break easily. After my last vest broke... I got a new one last year, first thing I did was take the vest to the seamstress and have them double switch every seam so they dont pull apart.

SE lll for about 8 years give or take. Only cons are striker pocket holders are not vertical and it can get a little warm on hot days. If I was looking for a new vest I would most likely  buy the SE lll again.

Someone needs to make a quality turkey hunting back pack, couple of call pockets on the waist pack from on the move calling and when you sit down the pack can be laid between your legs and the from fully unzips to all your calls and strikers. Give a nice place to lay a call down when a bird is coming in. A center compartment would hold the rest of your gear layers food and water. Packs are way more comfortable than a vest

I took advice from Savduck and ordered a Knights hands free.  I was not so sure about it at first, but after wearing it in the field over the last few weeks for scouting purposes I have become very sure that I love it.  Only change I would make is for different options for individuals. Some love box calls, some love pots, some love trumpets.

Its only got enough room to hold 2 pots and the striker pocket although it can hold about 5-6 only has 2 retention straps for 2 strikers.  So its designed to hold 2 strikers. Other than that I have no complaints. Its one size fits all, so I cut the straps to fit and melted the ends down so nothing would be flopping around.

Seat is extra comfortable, and is held with magnets and straps. Nice and cozy.

I use a Super Elite most of the time. I've tried the Ol' Tom I-Beam and wasn't a fan. Got a Red head Bucklick Creek vest last year that I used when in Texas and after it got hot here in Alabama and Tennessee.

I am debating as to either the Ol Tom I beam or time and motion leaning toward the I beam because of pot and striker layout and magnetic seat.

Been thinking of the Knights my self for past week. It says large game bag included, but doesn't show where the large game bag goes, so i am thinking just over shoulder? Is there someplace it can be attached on back or added. Thats the only reasion I haven't ordered yet, do a lot of running and gunning and need to strip down as day warms up. I like haveing the big back pocket or game pouch on vest to put my extra clothing in. So how is the back set up on the Knights Vest.

I did not get a game bag with mine unless its talking about the built in bag on the back under the cushion. I am sure it is, so that's probably what they mean.

Tried 3 ol toms, and others at bass pro as well as Academy....went ahead and ordered the Tactical Tat'r 2.  Was unable to try one on first but it was time to get one. I ordered it in a L/XL. Hope this size is correct.  I can do a little snug , but despise floppy.

I ordered the Tatr II and III, as well as the Alps nwtf new vest.  Played with them for a couple weeks.  The NWTF Alps and Tatr III went back.  I kept the Tatr II and really like it.  The Alps is too heavy and one size fits all sucks.  Tatr III was just too floppy on me.  Tatr II fits like a glove and plenty of pockets.

That is the way to do it. I'll do just that, and send them back. COSTS some shipping, but it saves on gas going to and from places & you get what you really want in the end. Sweet!

Bought the Tatr II with the kickstand last year and i really enjoyed it.  The stand made longer sits more comfortable.  I even found that the back frame made leaning up against a tree on quick set ups more comfortable.   I would recommend to anyone looking for a new vest.

I have the primos strap vest.
Pros
plenty of storage for everything I carry (including the kitchen sink)
easily accessible pockets
mouth call case pocket
striker holder
Cons
too long for me (I'm 5'10" and it bunches up around my hips when I sit down, even with the shoulder straps as tight as they go.)
outside box call pocket is in a spot that when the vest bunches up, the handle of the box call digs into my hip
seat pad leaves some to be desired

With that being said, i'm probably going to sell this vest before the season. I"m looking into a few others so this thread helps a lot for me to decide which one I want. I'm thinking that I definitely want a kickstand vest

My Tat'r 2 came in and I love the fit.  Good n snug.  Great seat.

From the post above, I now wish I had splurged for the kickstand.
