I've got a buddy that has a M1 in 20 ga. He's wanting to put a FF3 or Vortex Venom on it. He's wondering if the receiver is to thin to drill and tap? He doesn't want to go with a saddle mount.
I had my M2 drilled and tapped for a Marlin 336 for a Docter ll sight with no issues.
Do you know if there's a difference in the thickness of the receivers between the M1 and M2?
I cant help with your question but I would die to find an M1 20 gauge!!!! Dip it in bottomland and talk about a trip down memory lane!

I am not sure on that.
I have a 20 gauge and 12 gauge M1 drilled and tapped. No issues
Ronnie,
I had my M1 drilled and tapped with no issues at all....

Thanks all. He's decided to go ahead and have it done.
Let us know how it turns out.

I had the above M2 drilled and tapped by a reputable gun smith in our area for the Marlin base and I put the FFIII on it. The smith told me that because of where the base has to sit there is one screw that is in the thicker portion of the receiver and he doesn't worry about that area BUT I believe it is the front area that is thinner.
He has done several and after initial test fit he epoxies the base and uses loctite on the screws. Overkill? Maybe but I don't plan on taking it off and he told me that if you take that base on and off a couple of times you will more than likely strip that front screw hole because of how thin it is.
As long as you are using a reputable smith that has experience with Aluminum receivers I don't think you will have any problems. Good luck with it as it is a nice compact deadly combination.
