Title: Winchester 1300 nwtf edition
Post by: Moorhouse10 on February 18, 2016, 06:59:14 PM
I just got a winchester 1300 nwtf edition I've always shot benellis and remingtons. So I don't really have an idea where to start with this gun. I'm considering getting it drilled and taped. Any recommendations on a  choke and ammo combos would be nice. Its a 22 inch barrel.

Excellent gun, I have the Buck & Tom edition of the 1300 with a 21" barrel.  I shoot Hevi-13 #7s through a Jellyhead .660 choke tube.  Awesome stuff.

Lots of options in hte pattern section of the forum, just search 1300.

I've got two 1300's, one has a comp-n-choke .655 that shoots Winchester longneards 3" #6, the other is scoped and shoots hevi shot 3" #6 thru a Indian creek choke. Both set up are killers.

That's a nice gun and you really have a number of options with it. I found the Carlson's Long Beard choke to do very well in the Win-Choke guns. While designed for WLB shells (and it does very well with them) it also does well with Hevi-13 shells in #6 or #7 shot. I plan to go to the range with the Triple Beard shells, hopefully tomorrow, and see how they pattern.

The SSX would be another choice that works well with those guns, again with the same shells.

You may want to consider seeing how it shoots/patterns prior to d/t and may even want to consider some open sights on that gun. If so, I'd recommend the Pro-Series from Truglo. They are fully adjustable for windage and elevation and have fiber optic inserts which pick up the light very well.

Whatever you choose, good luck with that gun and I hope you have a great turkey season.

Thanks,
Clark

I have a ssx and hevi shot choke. I'd be willing to mail them to you to try. I don't use either anymore

I have 5 of them. Two shorts and three with the 22" barrel. I have atleast 20 different chokes and usually run them all when a new ammo comes out.

That said. I shoot all of them with only a bead so I have to choose my choke and ammo combo that the particular gun likes. Right now I will say that all of the guns put the best numbers with an Indian creek and hevi 6's  or 7's. The only problem is POA and POI are not where I want them. So with the lack of sights I have to go with a different choke. All of the guns like my old TruGlo choke the one designed by Mark Banser. Very even and very nice pattern overall. second believe it or not is the old stardot. Very similar to the Banser. I have a jebs on the way so that will be my new project. As Clark always says the guns really love a good solid deep cleaning sometimes adding as much as a 30% increase in hits.

Those are some very good pattering shotguns, years ago a fellow that I worked with bought one that was the 22" barrel version, well I give him a hard time about the barrel being so short, cause I was young and dumb and thought a shotgun should have a 30" barrel to shoot good! He challenged me to shoot against my long barreled shotgun that I was bragging about, I told him pick the load and it's on, and I even put $20 on it! Well needless to say I got an education in short barrel shotguns, and I paid for the lesson. I don't remember how far we shot, and we were using milk jugs, with 4's I barely hit mine, and his was shot to hell! Never again will I bet against a shorty. He used that shotgun for everything, and always brought home meat. It will serve you well for years to come, and may you enjoy it!

I've owned 3 1300's. Al great shooters.  The one I have now, a 26" bbl universal hunter LOVES the longbeard choke and shots ridiculous patterns with mag blends, longbeards and federal heavyweight 7s.

That has been my gun of choice for the past 25+ seasons now. Love that laminated wood stock and engravings on both sides of the receiver. (I had my barrel sent out to Pro-Port to have the forcing cone lengthened and the barrel ported.) Best 2 chokes I have owned are the Rhino .660 along with Nitro company's 4x5x7 Hevishot loads, and a new last fall, Pattern Master Code Black along with Winchester's Longbeard shells. Still trying to decide between #4's and #5's with this combo. :turkey:
