  What are the ports in choke tubes designed to do?

They function to aid with stripping the wad away from the shot.

They say it helps with recoil too. Not so sure about that as every time I shoot a 3.5" she'll I find myself looking around for a couple of my teeth.

Man that's funny! Some wads in the shells don't work with ported chokes, like the fed fcw. They claim to be shot in non ported chokes for best results. But I've heard they work great in the sumtoy chokes.
