Title: i have seen a hen call in a gobbler
Post by: hotspur on February 09, 2016, 09:04:30 PM
The first turkey I ever killed was called up by a hen.  Long story short, scouted before opening day. Heavy rains that night.creek  swollen, late getting to spot. Hen yelping loudly, wait is that a hen sounds like a box call its a hunter, get a visual, its a hen assembly yelping, hear those gobbles after the yelping? Gobblers coming, move up between hens and gobs. Gobblers there out of sight, yelp three times on my true double, triple gobble, he's running to me 7 yards, piled him up at 5 steps.   sometimes hens call gobblers

Sometimes?  They call more in than we do.

I have had hens "help" me, call them in and are quite talkative while on the way and drag a gobbler along.

My first spring turkey hunt.  A buddy was helping me get started and offered to call - I figured a calling lesson was in order.  Were heading to a spot and crossing a little culvert with a creek and daylight to go to a bird about a 1/2 mile away and one thunders off 150 yards away right down the creek!  We set up.  As he starts calling a hen on the side away from the gobbler starts tree yelping.  He pretty much lets her do the work and in comes Tom.  I killed him so quick that we took a picture, hung him about 20 feet up in a tree (a lot of coyotes in that area) and went and worked the other bird for him - we got on him and he was still on the limb. He flew out the wrong way, but dang was I hooked!

My experience has taught me to call in the hen and shut up when she's close to you so she can do her magic by attracting the Thunder Chicken into lethal range ... BOOM!
