Title: The birds were not only silent...
Post by: old frank on March 29, 2011, 08:01:41 PM
...they were invisible too :(

First chance to get out this morning. Got to the land good and early. It was about 40 degrees, calm but wet from all the recent rain.

I dropped down into a hardwood creek bottom that is close to two food plots. Lots of turkey sign and I have seen them roosted here before.

It was dead silent. I usually hear a gobble somewhere but not today and that set the mood for the day.

I sat, I walked, I called softly, I tried to shock one. Absolutely nothing.

I covered a lot of terrain and saw good sign, droppings and tracks but saw one hen stroll across the trail and I couldn't even interest her.

I had to quit at 2 and head for home as my Grand Kids were coming for dinner.

Disappointing day but that is hunting!

That's what a lot of the southern hunters are sayin, quiet all over? Up here the birds a going crazy, I stopped at the egg farm on the edge of town and I'd of swore it was a turkey farm, there was at least a doz gobblers and hens to sounding off in the woods behind the barn this morning. The flocks are just starting to break up, up here she said she had 44 birds in her back yard yesterday, that's about half that flock that winters there. I went to town Sun morning and saw 5 fields with gobblers and hens in. Only 18 days till our first season opens.

Some What. I went with a friend today on his well managed 100 acre piece of land.

I went to a blind on a food plot with woods and fields around me and he went back towards a swamp.

I heard two different gobblers in the distance but could not get a response or any action.

He had one coming in that got hung up with some hens and another that gobbled at every sound but would come no closer.
He is not big on patience so he went after it but never got anything going.

So, they may be getting a little fired up. Last week again on my land, I never heard a sound or saw a turkey but still lots of sign.

Not a lot of gobbling here, a few gobbles before fly down then maby 1 or 2 gobbles after they hit the ground. Several times I hear only 1 gobble on up in the morning and nothing else.
