Do many of you guys use a longbox? I'm thinking about getting one to try. Any suggestions on one and how to use it? Is it mainly used as a locator?
Give Al at SS Calls a shout and he'll take very good care of you on all aspects of longboxes.
Billy Bush " Beggin Machine" 607-698-2684. i have used it as a locator as well as to call them in. If you can run a regular box call you can run it. Pm your number and I will send you a picture. Hope this helps.
A good long box is more than a locator. It can do anything a short box can do and in most cases better.
In my limited abilities I was told cedar paddle in the spring, hard paddle in the fall as a locator. They can be played soft like a short box or scream as a locator. You do not close the lid shut like on a short box to make a Yelp. You will reach your roll over some where near where the leading edge of your paddle is near the edge of box. It's hard to explain, but if you had one in your hand you will know what I mean. There's a video on YouTube of Mr Cost running a long box you should watch.

They were at the top of my list, everything I have from them is good
My two favorite long boxes were made by SS Custom Calls and Russell Beard. Can't go wrong with either one....keep your eyes on the classifieds section if you have some time. There are some great long boxes that show up there sometimes.
Tim Bulloch. Jeff McKamey.

Check out the link below, there is a video link of Ralph Snodgrass - Lightning Strike Turkey Calls - showing how to run one of his long boxes. I carry one of his long boxes (and a mini long box he made as well!), and also hunt a Billy Bush long box.
A well built long box will, depending on where your paddles strikes the box rail, kee-kee easily, or young hen yelp, or jake yelp, or gobbler yelp, and how you grip or hold the paddle handle will change the tone slightly - you can get six or more different turkey sounds out on a single long box. They crank loud when needed, and produce all the soft talk just as easily.
Unless it is pouring rain, I NEVER leave home without one.

I have around 50 longboxes and carry one most of the time. As Bill Lyman said, they are much more than a locator. A good longbox will have a couple different hens on each side of the call. Two names mentioned, SS and Ralph Snodgrass, both make an outstanding longbox.
What everybody else said plus will add another name................. Steve Kimble from PA.
Got this pair just a little while back and am waiting on another in mahogany and purpleheart.
