Title: Federal Heavyweights and Mossberg 835/935
Post by: jordanz7935 on January 23, 2016, 09:15:19 PM
Hey guys I'm looking to try out some 3.5" Fed HW #7 in my 935. Ive been using longbeards with good results for the last few yrs but would like to give the HW 7s a try in the 935.Ive been shooting HW #7s in my 20 ga for 5yrs now and love how they crush birds .To me the Fed HW performance is worth the added cost for turkey hunting.  For chokes I have a stardot and a Kicks GT.680.I'm not looking for big numbers, I'd be happy with 170 in the 10" @40. Just looking for feedback on from guys who have shot this load in 835s/835s.

the .676 stardot and the .670 SSX will be 2 good chokes that should fix you up with no problem

If you have the factory non ported turkey choke, that would be worth a try.

Would be careful using technology factory tube for hevi weight. Not sure about the newer factory tubes but the older mossberg tubes are only rated for lead shot.

Sorry, meant the instead of technology. Love auto correct.

I'll have to check the one I have. Didn't consider or see anything on the tube when I've tested with it. Definitely needs to be looked into.

I don't know if they have upgraded the choke tubes on the mossy's but I bought mine around 2001 or so and the factory tube is stamped "lead only". That was before hevi shot or any HTL shot was out there. Maybe they have upgraded and got with the times but just thought it would be good to mention.

Hevi shot came out in 1999 but factory chokes haven't been upgraded and I wish they'd look into that. I did shoot it through mine anyway without problems til I got a primos jellyhead.

Guess I was behind the times too. Least on the hevi shot. Ha ha.

Thanks for the replies guys. I was thinking the stardot would be a safe place to start. And no I don't have the factory turkey choke I gave it to a buddy years ago. I know kicks 680 shoots the heavyweights well in 10 ga but I'm doubtful on how it'll do in my 935. I did manage to find some info on another forum where a few guys had good luck with truglo ssx.670,carlson.675 non ported and the truglo bone collector .670 with the HWs.
I'm gonna pick up a box this weekend and pattern them asap.

I don't think you'll be disappointed. I tried running some through mine with a Pure Gold tube in it and I got a good bit better than what you'd be happy with. Don't recall the exact numbers though. Shot a bird last spring with them at 37 yards and the results were awesome.
