Any suggestions for a mid May hunt. I don't care what subspecies. Two states would be nice.
I'll be in KS in May. If things go to plan I'll be rolling out on May 7th.
Indiana comes in late this year. 4/27-5/15 this spring. Last year I didn't get mine til 5/8 and they was just getting good. Probably not where you were thinking but a possibility. I hunt the Ohio river counties of the Hoosier NF. PM me if you want any seat o the pants local knowledge.
Colorado and Utah. I like to wait until the second week of May or so before I chase the Merriams in these two states. First of all, the longer you wait the better the access to National Forest land because of the melting snow, and best of all, everybody else goes home by then....
PA and MD treated me well last May. WV is another good option. I don't think PA and WV seasons come in until the last week of April.
Washington and Idaho
Wv is supposed to be opening a week earlier this year. Almost the same time as Md. Md always opens on a Sat. And Wv should be openin the following monday. The 16 th and 18th respectively. Md has a five week season compared to Wv's four week. MD also allows all day hunting the last two weeks of season. Haven't confirmed those dates but should be right.
Just double checked. Both states open on the 18th now.
I like the KS and MO option in that timeframe. Hunt MO first, then KS. That allows you 4 birds to harvest. I allow 5 days hunting, 7 total for round trip.
