Besides the basics; gun, shells, vests, calls, etc... What turkey hunting trinket/gadget or accessory do you find offers the greatest value dollar for dollar to your enjoyment of the sport? For me, I'd have to say at $19.95 (on sale) the Cabela's Gobbler Lounger sure gets used a whole lot and has added greatly to the overall quality of many hunts both successful and unsuccessful. What say ya'll?
MATERIAL THINGS
A GOOD PAIR OF LEATHER GLOVES
Thermacell
Camo hoodie that I got off the clearance rack at bass pro back couple years ago...19.95....
An HS Strut strap on to the leg gun rest. Sure makes keeping that gun up when waiting on that gobbler.
I'd have to agree about the gobbler lounger. I love mine. Have had it with me every hunt since I bought it years back.
Yeppers, the Thermacell
My turkey tote/sling. I've had it for years , can't even remember where I got it. It makes lugging a big tom a few miles back to the truck so much easier.
Gobbler lounger / Thermacell
Won't leave the house without either.

Used my lounger more this year than I ever have, thermocell as well. Love the HS strut gun holder but planning on picking up the knight vest.

My thermocell and gps. I just have a mid range Garmin unit but it gives me the peace of mind to venture out to find the turkeys.
Gun holder that goes around my leg gets a lot of use from me.

Gobbler Lounger, Thermacell, and an H.S. Strut gun rest all go with me every time I hunt.

Being a bit of a MacGyver, I thought of this DIY gadget some years back. Attach a wooden cove chip to your box call to silence it in your pocket. Flip over the cove and you're calling. Flip it back and you're silent again. Also keeps the chalk from wearing off.

Agreed! We can expect to see something like that on the market before long, I suspect. ...Clever solution to an age-old turkey hunting problem. :icon_thumright: :icon_thumright:

These 2 come to mind. My homemade wing-flapper and Push-pin sock made from a gun sleeve. Both work fantastic, especially my "flapper".
I have a diaphragm turkey wallet/necklace that came free with H.S. Strutt diaphragms years ago... It is small, simple, and light, and I can get 6 calls in there. It is always around my neck. I also have one of my box calls in a call holster, rather than my vest... Between the diaphragms and box call on my person, I feel amply prepared if I decide to drop the more cumbersome vest to make a (quick) short move, or series of short moves on a bird more freely and quietly.
Good compact binoculars. Somewhat useful for hunting (and spotting/watching turkeys), but for me, more useful for entertainment... On a long sit/wait, I get a lot of enjoyment watching wildlife (besides turkeys) with nice bino's.
I like my OnX Hunt app but if I'm going somewhere I have never been before I'm going to have a couple old school back ups on me.
I'm too set in my ways to not have a paper map and a Silva Explorer compass or Brunton Pocket Transit.
If I get "mis-located" I don't want to have to worry about a battery to get me out.
I have a hate, love, hate relationship with them but I can't hunt without them anymore and that would be my blinds and seats. Face paint would be another, even in the blind I paint my face black, especially if I am not able to set up into the shadows as much as I would have liked. Last season I hunted I am positive they were seeing into the blind but I had a tree that had broken and was continuing to settle so I could not set up as far into the woods as I would have liked and it seems they were picking me up more than they ever have since I started to use a blind.
Permethrin! I'd go in the woods without a gun before I'd go without it on my clothes.
My fly down wing. I use it a lot and it's has brought me a lot of success.

What do you use for the wing?
I either use the tips of the wings of a tom, or pheasant wings... I like the pheasant wings better.

I cut off a gobbler wing at the joint, then bondo it once I have it spread out where I want it.
I've thought about using a small birds wing, but I've got a bunch of turkey ones, so why not. If I find a roadkill hen, I'll grab hers this spring.

X however many on Thermacell. Permethrin is a must have given the rise in tick borne illnesses.
I can't say any one thing but I have a short list, my Glenda Green butt cushion, a thermacell, and wet wipes.

Funny... I cut the wings off a dead hen I found, used them for years, and lost them on a hunt. I did like them better than any other wings tried, and if I find another dead hen, will likely take advantage...
Pheasant wings work almost as good, especially if you spread and dry them (and they are lighter than turkey wings)... Once again, I need a new pair, as looks like the rats or squirrels got to my last pair...
Wings are easy. On the inside of the wing, right at the tip, cut parellel to the primary feathers and just on top of them but under the bone they are attached to. You might have to clip a tiny bone at the end...or just dull your knife.
You end up with the 10 primaries held together by the skin. No bone. Dry the wing slightly spread and it will remain that way until you leave by a tree somewhere. :)
Weighs about 3 ounces (it's just feathers and a bit of dried skin) and you can clip the feathers if you want it a bit shorter. Paint it too if the turkey color bothers you for safety.
I would post a pic but can't seem to do that since the board was redone.
