Title: Owl call recommendations
Post by: papabuzzard on February 09, 2011, 03:21:43 PM
I'm looking for a good owl call.  I prefer custom made.  Does anyone have a recommendation?  Custom made or production?  Thanks in advance for any help.

I like the synthetic Harrison HootNStick   http://hookscalls.com/shop/locator-calls/new-synthetic-harrison-hoot-39-n-stick/prod_51.html

I've never tried the wood.

I have the Hootn stick as well.  After just a few minutes of listening to some youtube videos of barred owl, I was sounding just like him.  Not really, but pretty decent.  Hope to try it out soon and the barred owl mating season is getting started.

I've got a James Harrison custom hooter. That thing is bad to the bone.

Try using your own mouth this sping, no joke either.  I hoot everyday for practice.  It's a real good change especially if you hunt public land.

I don't personally own one (YET!) but the Harrison is the best I've ever heard. I own both models of the Palmer tubes and can tell you the Harrison is several steps ahead as far as realism is concerned.

Just recently ordered one from Hooks. I had heard some very good reviews. I'm excited to see how it sounds.

I use my own mouth and get good response sometimes. I hoot about every day in season and out. One less thing to worry about. If you want a call the Hootin Stick is hard to beat.

I also use my own voice.  Took a while before I was confident enough to use it in the field but wouldn't have it any other way now.

You sound like a fool practicing it at first.  Wouldn't recommend walking around the local mall practicing.  Might get some funny looks.

I owl well with my voice but I still carry a Harrison.  Some mornings I just don't feel like using my own voice due to sore throat or stuffy head.

The Hoot N Stick sounds better that about 8 out of 10 average turkey hunters using their voice. Probably 9 out of 10. I have the poly, one in curly maple, one in a wood I can't remember o
done and hopefully another on the way for my brother.

The bocote sounds awesome. Especially the one James had hidden in his shirt pocket at nationals  :o
