Post by: kyturkeyhunter4 on May 19, 2015, 12:25:17 PM
I'm going to get me some new turkey decoys for next year, I'm looking at the DSD decoys have any of you guys used any of these decoys. They look really good in the photos, any info on them would be gratefully appreciated.

I use them and love them.  I have the jake, strutter, and every hen DSD makes.

I vary what I have out based on the stage of the season I am hunting.

From my experiences using them I would definitely want the jake.  I have watched mine get charged and flogged too many times to not use it at a setup.  In fact this spring my wife's uncle shot a gobbler off the top of the decoy as he was kicking its a$$.

I'm indifferent on the strutter because I've not used it enough to say anything.

In reference to the hens, I would get the leading hen that cabelas sells and also the upright then.

The leading hen looks great on a stake and can also be laid on the ground in a submissive position in front of the jake, so being a dual use is great.

I would also look strongly at the upright hen for the sole reason that I believe there is something in the position of the upright hen that drives real hens crazy.  If I'm hunting a field and have the jake and a few hens out almost every time a hen works near the decoys she approaches the upright, and usually only the upright.  Responses are typically aggressive and the decoy gets pecked and flogged.

The feeding hen looks great and it may be helpful having it in the group but I've never witnessed a turkey do anything but walk by it.  That may just be a typical response to a feeding turkey.

If you are looking at getting three I would get the jake, leading hen, and upright hen.

The DSD's are great.  My buddy has the hens and we hunted over them all year.  However, give the
Avian-x decoys a look.  Thats all I own and I prefer them to the DSDs.  It's all preference but I love the look of the new Avian-X hens.  I also have the jake which is really comparable to the DSD..  This is just my opinion but I think the Avian hens are slightly better looking but the DSD jake gets the slight edge.  However, I have collapsed my Avian-X decoys several times and while most of the time I carry them inflated, the ability to collapse them down for carry is very nice at times, and you dont have that option with DSD.

Just one mans opinion..

I agree avian x hen decoys look great..my vote is for the avian x with how mobile these are on carrying in the field.

When I use a decoy it is DSD. Great color, detail, quality materials, good company, and made in the USA.

Love my DSD. Also bought a Dakota Jake back when they were on sale for $33 and it works well. We owned Avian X as well, but sold them and held onto the DSD.

DSD jake is a must!

I really like the Deception Outdoors decoys as well. ..

Here's the Deception boss hen and DSD jake.

I have the DSD and Avian X jake and upright hen.  Both are very effective.  Both get awesome reactions from turkeys.   My dad killed a gobbler this year and accidentally put some shot in the Avian X jake.  It will no longer hold air longer than an hour or two.   I killed a gobbler that was coming to flog my DSD jake.  I shot it and honestly you can't tell that I did.  It's good to go!   I prefer the DSD!
