Title: Turkey's, smallmouth, morel's, trout and a coyote!
Post by: Ozark870Hunter on May 14, 2015, 12:03:11 AM
Just wrapped up my MO spring season and it was a memorable one for sure!
Hunted or called 11 out of 21 days. Chased trout at Maramec and Montauk, and smallies/morel hunting while floating the Big Piney river after hunting stopped at 1pm.
Scouted and ran trailcams on 3 separate properties. Had birds figured out pretty well on all three.
Priority #1 was to get my brother on his first bird. He took vacation and was off first 7 days of season.
Well he got his butt kicked for the first 4 days. Coyote clearing out the woods one hunt, deer blowing and doing the same on another. Birds gobbling but hanging up.  And getting busted while trying to make a move. I thought he was cursed!
Finally on day 5 his luck changed. Sitting on the opposite ridge from where he was busted the day before, he had 2 jakes and a tom fired up and closing the distance, and the jakes won the race. After he couldn't stand to wait any longer for the tom to possibly come into range, he took a jake at 10 yrds.
I was at work that morning, and had lent him a nice box call to boost his confidence.
Needless to say I've lost a nice box call!

I returned to the same property my brother got his jake at the following morning. Set up on the opposite side of the creek they have been roosting in. Only heard 1 gobble, and after a few soft tree yelps, he pitched down and came in on a string. After only 3 gobbles he was flopping at 30 yrds.
#22 lbs. 10" beard. 3/4" spurs.

2nd weekend of season and I was calling on a Scott Berry box call for a buddy around 9am sitting back to back in a cedar patch in the corner of a pasture. Buddy says "you hear that? Sounds like coyotes!"
A few moments later I look up and see a yote crossing the field at 80 yrds. A few mouth distress squeels and I had a coyote heading straight at me. 1 round of #5 Longbeard XR's at 20 yrds was all it took. This is the first year MO had allowed coyotes to be taken during turkey season. I'm glad I bought my small game tag!
Spent the final weekend trying to fill tag #2 but never connected.
Great season none the less!!!

Coyote and a tom walk into a field I'll kill the coyote every time before the tom.
I have watched them work nesting hens till the mouse in the weeds got their attention (he had big sharp teeth).
Sounds like a memorable year, remember to close your eyes and go back.

You just need a small game tag. Already get one every year  anyway.
