I have been toying with the idea of getting a single for hunting turkey. I would love to see some of your singles and patterns or birds they have shot. Please also tell what kind and choke. Do any of you shoot a factory fixed choke and what have the patterns looked like? Thanks
10ga new England firearms, trulock .680, federal HW #7 or #6. Custom rattle can paint job. These are my 2 birds from Arkansas this year. I have hunted with a single shot for 11 years all of which have been with this gun. Between Arkansas and Illinois she's 27 and 0. No need for additional shells if the turkey is stone dead after the first shot. As for on the paper I have slept since then and I can't remember exact numbers but it's devastating with the federal HW, Mag Blends, Hevi 13 #5, and any lead load I have put through it. All these loads are lethal at ranges far surpassing what we are suppose to talk about and what I take shots at.
I have a New England 12 ga. 3.5 with a factory full choke, I shoot Fed. heavyweight 7, and 9x7 and 9x8 tss loads in it, it puts out a great hunting pattern,with the 9x7tss it gets around 225 in a 10in. circle at 40, 9x8 tss gets around 155, and the heavy weight 7 gets around 180 in a 10in. at 40, the gun likes larger shot, going to get a straight load of tss 7 for next spring. My son mostly hunts with it as it gives him some wiggle room.
I have heard the recoil is brutal with these guns.
NEF 20 ga, fixed choke barrel. Federal Premium Heavyweight Turkey 3"x 6. 40 yds. Recoil not a big deal. Sims slip on pad.

Are you talking about the 10's? I have shot several of them and compared to an 835 they are a pussycat.

They are what I call purpose guns. They're not range guns. They're lightweight so easy to carry in the turkey woods. Let's be honest here-how many of us remember the recoil when we get that shot on a big Tom? Now when you're working on deciding what load to use, I do recommend that you find a way to hold down the recoil...
The 10 gauge singles flat out work and the recoil isn't bad at all.
They have become very hard to find but my favorite single shot is the Mossberg SSi-ONE. It has all the features that we look for in a single shot gun, hammerless, built in sight base, 3.5" chamber and .775 over-bored barrel. They are worth looking for if you have the time and patience.

I totally agree they are killer. Light weight very maneuverable and kill anything that stand in front of them.
Love my grandsons CVA 20. It's a hammer gun and has a super sweet trigger. Shooting factory choke with HW7's and does 140 at 35 yards. Repeat..35.
