Having a Saturday permit and no concrete birds located I went to a spot this morning where I had seen birds consistently about a week and a half ago. I set up the DSD's in a weedy field at what ended up being a little further than ideal but not horrible. I ended up setting myself up behind a big blow down that gave me great cover and a steady rest for the 835.
Didn't hear any gobbling when birds were still in the roost but wasn't too concerned because I could stick out this spot for a couple hours before I had to leave for work. At about 6:20 I heard a gobble about 200 yards away, unable to locate the exact direction I sat tight. Then I hear a loud sharp putting that I knew was different from any of the songbirds around me. Then about 125 yards to my left I see a hen coming on a string, obviously ticked off the decoys were in her territory. She got to the DSD hen and began pecking and beating her up. After being satisfied she showed the deke who was boss she then relaxed and began to pick bugs.
Then out of the corner of my eye I spot a dark figure coming from the direction the hen came from. I quickly realize it is a good tom and steady my gun in the decoy's spot. He didn't break strut the whole way in and when he reached the 40 yard mark I settled the crosshairs and gave him a load of Mag Blend and down he went. 17.6 lbs 7/8" Spurs and a 12" beard!
