Let me first start by saying that I'm admittedly new to be an outdoorsman. This is my first season of hunting and never really spent much time in the woods, nevermind alone in the woods. This morning I arrived at my chosen setup, about 100 yards away from a known roost spot. I got my decoys out and set up against my tree. Just as the sun comes up, I hear loud crunching and spot movement down the path I'm adjacent to. At first I thought it was another hunter, but quickly realized it was much much bigger. It was a large black bear. My "fight or flight" kicked in and I abandoned my decoys and gear and pretty much sprinted the 200 yards out of the woods.
I've read many conflicting things regarding black bears...they're more afraid of you than you are of them, don't run, etc. I wanted to ask the experienced folks here, how I should handle that kind of situation in the future, should it happen again.
stay put if it trys to attack or acts like it shoot it and dont stop shooting. never had one come up on before but thats what i would do. shoot first ask questions later
I've had close encounters with black bears a couple times. As soon as they caught my scent in the wind they quickly left. I would not run or even move. If it acted aggressive I would shoot it in the face. I seriously doubt that would happen though.
Sit still....soon as they pick up your scent they're gone. I've had many black bear encounters while in the woods and never had an issue. Now if you get between mom and her cubs she might not be real happy about that....
