Title: Tagged out in Tennessee!
Post by: Tennessee Lead on May 02, 2015, 10:29:26 AM
Today made morning #7 that I've been able too wake up and go Turkey hunting. I was able to call in my 7th Tom. By far the best and most exciting season I've had.
I climbed up top again and finally heard a Tom gobble at an owl. It was in a different zip code. I got my Hoot'N Stick out and shocked a gobble toward the front of the property and across a holler. I started that way closed the distance and he was still several hundred yards away. So I had heard two crows already so I reached for my Heckler crow call. Immediately I got an answer directly to my right across the holler. I was close to a spot that I would like to set up at so I started a few tree yelps and clucks. He was tearing it up to those on my David Halloran walnut slate. I made a fly down cackle and proceed to the tree I wanted to be at. If he would follow the log road up the hill he would come out were I killed #2.
He hushed and I assumed he was on his way. After several minutes of silence I began to call again. I had turkeys gobbling all over the place now. One had fired up one another point above me across the holler. I got up walked up a little higher on the ridge so I was directly across from him and called real soft. Clucks purrs and yelps. He really lit up so I cut to him and eased back to my set up and called again. I had decided to carry a hen decoy with me and I am glad I did. After I sat back down he gobbled on my side he had flew across just like I had hoped. I knew my set up was going to fail at this point. I had to switch trees real quick hoping he would follow the log road down. He didn't he dropped in the woods and gobbled and strutted all the way down. He was headed right at me and my gun was at a 90 degree angle the other way. He spit and drummed and put on a show. Unfortunately my camera was facing the other way too.
He saw the hen and changed his direction and allowed me to leave my gun pointed the direction it was. He stopped at 10-15 yards and drummed real hard. It jarred me like a subwoofer. He went behind the tree I was setting at previously and allowed me to tuck my head on my stock. He stepped out at 8 yards and I made the shot to kill him. I was so afraid I would miss at that distance but I didn't.
It was one incredible rush. I am certain I would have been able to swing on him as he was walking between trees and killed him without the hen decoy but I am glad I decided to try and use one this morning. That is the first Tom I've killed with one out and it really helped to have that in my lap shot this morning.
I set a goal for the year to kill 4 turkeys under 30 yards and self film each one and by golly I done it! I couldn't be more happier.  I'll try to get the video uploaded after while.

I am grateful to have enjoyed the Turkey woods this spring it has been incredible. I hope to squeeze in a few hunts with my Dad now and hopefully take my little brother again.

Here is the video of this mornings hunt. It's not as good a footage as my last one but I did get the kill shot at 8 yards.
