We are heading to camp today for the first 3 days of NY season. I have a guesitmate that it's going to be a poor season in my area .( Southern Washington County ) I've seen very few turkeys so far this spring . Hard long winter. I hope I'm wrong. Web

I cant wait! Bird numbers are down for sure throughout the whole state. My uncle who was my turkey hunting mentor, lives in and hunts washington county. He said hes been seeing plenty of birds,mainly prime hunting spots like farms though. He took his grandson out for the youth hunt and had plenty of action both days. He also said that the local youth contest last weekend had 13 birds entered, most of them being mature longbeards. Best of luck to you! Best advice i can give is if you can find one stay on him and be patient.

It was a very long winter. I am in Saratoga county. I remember this time 2 years ago everything was already thick and green. This year the woods are still VERY brown and little to know green (minus pines of course). I was setting up some blinds last weekend and saw 2 birds in the woods. I tried to avoid the fields.
Haven't been hearing much gobbling here in Niagara County but ive been seeing them.
I can't wait either. We scouted a couple nights ago and watched 4 mature toms strutting with 10 hens on the farm we hunt. We are going to head down tonight and hopefully put them to bed and be on them bright and early in the morning.
It's a long wait while a lot of other states have been hunting, but it's finally here. Good luck to all of my fellow New Yorkers.

I am in north eastern new York near Saratoga, but hunt a bit south of that near Bennington Vermont border. I have also seen VERY FEW turkeys compared to last year. And VERY little gobbling BUT I can assure you that they are there or at least they were there this past weekend as I was able to see 2 and shot one of them. From what I am reading, due to the late blooming of the trees, we are a few weeks behind compared to last year so hopefully the birds will start breaking up and the toms will gobble more. Good luck!
We had between 1 and 5 birds gobbling in the mornings, depending on the day, from Friday through Sunday. Within 30 minutes of them hitting the ground, they shut up completely. They are henned up real bad and won't give our calling or decoys a second look really. We had one break off slightly but never got closer than 60 yards or so and then joined the rest of the group.
Hopefully they will start breaking up by this weekend and be a little more interested in the calling. They are on a strict pattern each morning and evening so if they stay on the pattern come this weekend, I have a plan that should put me in front of them about an hour after they hit the ground.
