Title: Chalk changing the pitch of a call???
Post by: Hankyorke on April 20, 2015, 08:41:37 AM
I'm new to box calls, in the past I've always used pot call and diaphrams...

I re-chalked a Jerry White box call the other day and picked it up this morning and I swear the pitch changed.  I have no idea what chalk was used previously, but I used some Primos box call chalk.

It is humid outside today (drizzling & 60*), but I've not had the call outside since I put chalk on it.  The windows haven't been open in 36 hours.

So is the humidity responsible for the change, the chalk, a combination of both, or do I need another cup of coffee?

chalk will effect the sound of the call you got good chalk on it now what kind of wood is it made off that makes a difference .some woods like chalk and some not so much moisture will also effect the sound   some woods more then others

With a good box not enough chalk is better than too much.

I have some white chalk and some red... Maybe its in my head but I have a box that when i was using the white I thought it sounded ok to good and then I tried the red chalk and think it sounds a lot better. maybe its in my head but its quickly becoming my favorite box

Nope, not in your head. Some boxes do like different chalks. Most of the time it is hardly noticeable, others you can hear a definite difference.

So I'm not crazy.. that's great news  :z-dizzy:

Just don't ask me where I buy my chalk because I usually just buy enough new box calls that all come with a little piece that i'm set for chalk  :funnyturkey:

I have two longboxes in particular that do not like chalk at all.  Put a little chalk on the rails and that's all they want!!  Any chalk on the paddle and you can forget about any viable turkey sounds.
Just need to experiment with the quantity of chalk and what chalk to use.

If you over-chaulk...how do you safety remove it?

I just wipe them off with a dry paper towel, same as I do at the end of each season.
